Full-time
On-site
Taupo, NZ

SGS, teaming up with Gidlow Engineering, is expanding its footprint in New Zealand’s geothermal sector. They’re looking for an experienced ASME Welder to join the onsite team in Taupo, NZ, on a full-time basis. The company emphasises workmanship, safety and quality, and this role sits at the core of delivering reliable fabrication for geothermal and energy projects within a global organisation that values expertise and integrity. If you’re a skilled welder who takes pride in precise work and solving technical challenges, this could be the next move for you.

In this role you’ll deliver welding that meets ASME codes and standards, interpreting drawings, blueprints and welding specifications to shape fabrications and assemble components to project requirements. You’ll conduct pre-work inspections of materials and equipment to verify readiness, perform quality checks with precision tools to ensure tolerances, and keep detailed records of welding procedures, inspections and test results to support traceability. You’ll identify defects and contribute to corrective actions, operate and maintain welding and fabrication equipment, and work closely with supervisors and colleagues to meet production schedules while upholding health, safety, environmental, and quality standards. You’ll also have opportunities to contribute ideas for continuous improvement of fabrication and welding processes.

Shaping metal for geothermal power

The daily rhythm centres on applying your welding expertise to projects in the geothermal space, ensuring work is performed safely and to exacting quality. You’ll translate technical drawings and welding specifications into finished components, manage fitting and assembly tasks, and participate in safety and quality checks throughout the fabrication journey. Collaboration with a team that values precision and adherence to standards will help you meet project timelines without compromising on workmanship or compliance.

What the team needs from you

Must-have requirements to be considered

  • A current ASME IX certification up to 6G, or an equivalent welding qualification
  • Proven welding experience in industrial, manufacturing, energy, or heavy engineering settings
  • Strong familiarity with ASME codes and standards, especially the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
  • Experience with multiple welding processes and fabrication techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, fabrication plans and welding specifications
  • Experience with mechanical fitting, assembly and installation activities

Nice-to-haves that help you stand out

  • Understanding of metallurgy and how different materials behave
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment and quality control procedures
  • Great attention to detail and a methodical approach to solving problems
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to keep accurate documentation
  • Genuine commitment to health, safety, and quality
  • Clear communication and ability to work well within a team
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to support a range of workshop and site-based activities

Tips for applying

Highlight your ASME IX certification up front on your resume and call out that you have 6G or an equivalent qualification, so the team can see your core credential immediately.

Show concrete examples of your experience in industrial, manufacturing, energy, or heavy engineering environments, and tie them to ASME standards, especially if you’ve worked with Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. If you can point to specific projects where you followed those codes, include brief outcomes or metrics.

Be ready to talk through how you read and apply technical drawings, fabrication plans and welding specifications. A brief, project-based story helps illustrate how you translate a drawing into a safe, precise weld and proper fit-up.

Prepare a question that reflects the role’s emphasis on safety and continuous improvement, such as asking how the team captures lessons learned to refine welding processes or how new procedures are rolled out on site.
