DPD UK, part of Geopost and a market leader in parcel delivery and ecommerce solutions, is looking for an Assistant Management Accountant to join the Central Operations Finance team in Smethwick. This is a permanent, full-time role at 37.5 hours per week with hybrid working (three days in the office, two at home) and a base in Smethwick B66 1BY. The business turns over close to £2 billion and is focused on delivering reliable service through the best technology and people, and it also holds values as a Disability Confident Employer and a Valuable 500 company. This opportunity will suit someone who enjoys numbers, loves clear reporting and wants to help Operations run more efficiently.

In this position you’ll help with the accounting, analysis and administration of DPD UK’s Operations under one of the Central Operations Finance Managers. Your daily work will revolve around pulling together the P&Ls, creating performance dashboards and reports, and partnering with stakeholders to ensure costs are recorded accurately and promptly. It’s a good fit for someone who wants to grow in management accounting within a large logistics operation and who values cross-team collaboration and data-driven decision making.

If you’re aiming to build a career in finance within a busy operation and enjoy turning data into actionable insight, this role could be the right next step.

Central Operations finance rhythm

Day to day, you’ll prepare the daily and weekly P&Ls and translate numbers into readable, actionable insights for the operational teams. You’ll generate supportive performance dashboards and management reports that help drive efficiency, and you’ll work with stakeholders across the business to ensure costs are captured accurately and on time. Balance sheet reconciliations will form part of the routine, and you’ll carry out variance analysis to understand the gaps between actual results and the budget. You will support the Finance Manager with budgeting and forecasting for the year and handle ad hoc information requests from stakeholders to aid decision making. You’ll also get involved in projects aimed at improving or automating processes within the Central Operations team and, when asked, help prepare and present information for reviews. A focus on cost control will sit at the heart of the role as you identify opportunities to tighten expenses and support other tasks as needed.

What you’ll need to bring to the role

  • University degree with a minimum 2:1 classification in any discipline, plus a willingness to study ACCA or CIMA (ACA is not offered).

  • Strong analytical ability and a knack for presenting results in a simple, clear way.

  • Ability to manage your workload independently and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines.

  • A constructive problem solving mindset and the drive to deliver results.

  • Capability to build rapport with the Finance team and other departments, along with solid communication skills.

  • Strong computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrate the core values of DPD – Passion, Respect, Honesty, Flexibility, Caring and Accountability.

Nice-to-haves that could help you hit the ground running

  • Experience handling balance sheet reconciliations or related general ledger tasks in a similar environment.

  • Familiarity with budgeting and forecasting activities in a corporate finance setting.

  • Background creating dashboards or management information reports to support operational decisions.

  • Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams to support operational goals.

Advice for applicants

First, lead your resume with your 2:1 degree and clearly state your willingness to pursue ACCA or CIMA, noting that ACA is not offered here. Tie this to the job by showing any steps you’ve already taken toward professional qualification and how they align with the role.

Second, prove the must-have skills by citing specific examples where you performed variance analysis, prepared dashboards or P&Ls, and supported budgeting or forecasting. If you’ve done balance sheet reconciliations or cost control work, describe the impact in measurable terms.

Third, get ready for interview questions about your experience turning data into decisions. Bring a concrete example of a project where you automated a process or improved reporting within a team, and explain how you communicated the findings to stakeholders across departments.

Fourth, consider asking about the Central Operations projects currently in flight and how success is measured for this role. A smart question could be to ask how this position collaborates with other departments to drive operational efficiency and what a typical impact looks like for a new assistant management accountant.
