The role involves field inspections on highway, bridge and design-build projects, ensuring compliance with plans, specs and safety rules, while solving problems, documenting non-compliant work, and maintaining project records. Ideal candidates have about three years of highway-related experience, strong written and verbal communication, basic math, and proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction documentation tools. Required or time-to-obtain within six months include VDOT Soil and Aggregate Compaction NICET II, VDOT Asphalt Field I/II, ACI Concrete Field I or equivalents, and several safety/DEQ/OSHA credentials. PlanGrid, AWP, or SharePoint experience and an engineering degree are preferred. Emphasize field leadership and independent work in your application, and confirm CHBC and driving record readiness.
RK&K's Construction Engineering Inspection and Construction Management Division is hiring entry to mid-level Construction Inspectors in and around the Hampton Roads, VA area. This role will primarily perform work in VDOT’s Hampton Roads District, adjacent Districts as well as localities inclusive of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Williamsburg, Emporia, and Suffolk. As a Construction Inspector with RK&K you will apply your knowledge of construction, safety, quality, and materials to provide critical inspection services on heavy civil construction sites including highway, bridge, design-build /design-build projects. Physical Demands:
This role requires the ability to perform field inspections on active construction sites. The employee must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, navigate uneven terrain, and climb ladders or stairs. Ability to lift and carry inspection equipment and materials weighing up to 20–30 pounds on an occasional basis, with or without reasonable accommodation. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and may include exposure to construction-related hazards.
