Your Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Datacom Database Specialist to play a pivotal role in a strategic legacy modernisation programme. This is a unique opportunity to work on a high-profile migration initiative involving a long-standing Mantec application, where your expertise will be instrumental in unlocking the architecture of a complex Broadcom Datacom (Datacom/DB) environment and enabling its successful transition to VSAM.

As a key member of our delivery team, you will combine deep technical analysis, reverse engineering, and migration expertise to ensure data integrity, minimise business disruption, and support the modernisation of critical business systems. You'll collaborate with talented architects, developers, and business stakeholders while contributing to a significant legacy transformation project.

  • Analyse and document complex Datacom database architectures, including schemas, data structures, relationships, and access patterns.
  • Reverse engineer legacy database designs, data models, and application interactions within the Mantec ecosystem.
  • Investigate and identify Datacom dependencies across PL/1 applications, batch processes, utilities, and integrations.
  • Design and support migration strategies from Datacom/DB to VSAM, ensuring a seamless and reliable transition.
  • Create detailed technical documentation, data mappings, migration specifications, and design artefacts.
  • Partner with development and testing teams to assess data impacts, support data conversion activities, and validate migration outcomes.
  • Perform deep-dive analysis, troubleshooting, and problem resolution across legacy database environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including architects, developers, testers, and business stakeholders, to drive successful project delivery.

About You

Ideally, you are a seasoned Datacom Subject Matter Expert who thrives on solving complex legacy system challenges. You can rapidly assess an existing database landscape, identify migration risks and dependencies, provide technical leadership, and ensure all database changes are thoroughly documented, validated, and ready for a successful Datacom-to-VSAM migration.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with Broadcom Datacom (Datacom/DB), including database design, administration, support, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of mainframe environments, database architecture, storage structures, and performance optimisation.
  • Proven experience working with VSAM, z/OS (MVS), JCL, and batch processing in complex legacy application environments.
  • Demonstrated success in database migration, modernisation, reverse engineering, or transformation programmes.
  • Expertise in data extraction, conversion, recovery processes, and database utilities.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly understand and navigate complex legacy systems.
  • Strong technical documentation skills, including the creation of data mappings, technical specifications, and migration artefacts.
  • Effective communicator who can collaborate with architects, developers, testers, and business stakeholders while providing technical leadership and guidance.

For this role we are flexible if this role is full-time or part-time for the right person.
