Shaping Monta's design system in Berlin onsite, the Design System Engineer will own the end-to-end craft of a native AI-driven system that makes great UI the default for every designer and engineer. You’ll encode typography, spacing, motion, accessibility, and theming into semantic tokens and reusable components, build production-ready patterns, automate quality checks, and ensure multi-brand fidelity without forks. You’ll work across Figma, prototypes, and production code, and define how AI coding agents consume our tokens and constraints. Strong frontend skills in React, TypeScript, and CSS plus exceptional UI craft are essential, as is comfort with complex B2B interfaces and Storybook. To apply, tailor your portfolio to design systems and AI workflows, show outcomes, demonstrate collaboration, and prove English proficiency. On-site Berlin; no unsolicited recruiter replies; salary up to 80k EUR/year or 56k DKK/month depending on seniority.

Monta powers the EV charging ecosystem. With 300,000+ monthly users and millions of charge sessions every month, our platform accelerates the electrification of mobility.
This is a fast-moving place. The problems are hard, the pace is quick, and the bar is high. If you like real ownership, figuring things out, and seeing the direct impact of your work, you’ll do well with us.
AI is built into how we work. It helps us ship faster, make better decisions, and stay lean. Everyone at Monta is expected to use AI tools thoughtfully — and to find smart ways to use them to move the work forward.
Our principles keep us grounded: Build Together & Finish, Sweat the Details, Customer First, and Aim for the Moon.
The best part of Monta is the people — sharp, ambitious, and good to be around. You’ll be challenged, supported, and trusted to deliver.
We're looking for a Design System Engineer to make great UI the default output of the whole team, not something that queues behind one person. Monta should feel genuinely best in class to use and look like nothing else in EV charging. The way we get there is a design system that encodes our craft, so every designer, every engineer, and increasingly our AI coding agents produce on-brand, on-system UI by default. You will own that system end to end, and help define what an AI-native design system actually looks like in practice. If you have real craft and you are excited by how AI changes the way we build interfaces, this is a rare role to own from the front.
Make great UI the default. Build a system that helps every designer and engineer ship polished, consistent, accessible interfaces without routing everything through a central gatekeeper.
Raise Monta’s craft bar. Create a product that feels genuinely best in class to use, with a visual and interaction language that is recognisably Monta.
Make the system native to AI. Define how coding agents understand and use Monta’s components, patterns, and constraints so generated UI is on-brand and on-system by default.
Set the craft bar and make it repeatable. Decide what great looks like across typography, spacing, layout, density, motion, states, responsiveness, and accessibility, then encode it so the whole team hits it by default.
Own and evolve Monta’s design system across design and code. Build from semantic tokens and primitives through to complex patterns and production-ready components, favouring flexible, composable building blocks over one-off solutions.
Design and build product experiences yourself. When new interaction patterns need to be explored, move between Figma, prototypes, and production code to find the right solution and turn it into something reusable.
Make the system native to how we build with AI. Ensure coding agents can understand our components, tokens, patterns, and constraints through machine-readable specs, and build the tooling that keeps AI-generated UI on-brand and on-system.
Own our theming architecture. Make sure Monta and our white-label brands can share the same system cleanly without unnecessary forks or duplication.
Automate the quality bar. Build checks for token usage, accessibility, visual regression, and other forms of system drift so quality is protected automatically rather than relying on manual review.
Partner closely with designers and engineers on real product work. Spot recurring UX problems, improve the solution, and turn the strongest patterns into reusable building blocks.
Make the system easy to adopt. Keep documentation, examples, Storybook, design assets, and contribution workflows clear enough that teams can move quickly without going off-system.
Keep human process light and machine governance strict. Make contributing easy, make drift hard, and avoid turning the design system into either a bottleneck or a free-for-all.
You turn craft into leverage. You have the design judgement to define what great looks like and the engineering ability to encode it into a system that others can build on.
You are a production-level frontend engineer, regardless of where you started your career. You are fluent in React, TypeScript, and modern CSS, and comfortable building production components, interaction patterns, and theming systems.
You have exceptional UI craft. You notice hierarchy, typography, spacing, density, states, motion, and the small details that make an interface feel considered, and you can explain why.
You move comfortably between design and code. You can explore in Figma, prototype in React, or use AI-assisted workflows depending on what gets you to the right answer fastest.
You think in systems rather than individual screens. You have built or evolved a design system, component library, token architecture, or similar shared product infrastructure.
You are comfortable with complex, information-dense interfaces. Tables, filters, states, permissions, bulk actions, workflows, and other B2B patterns do not scare you.
You know how to operate a design system in production. Storybook, visual regression testing, and automated conformance tooling are part of how you think about quality and scale.
You treat accessibility as a testable bar, not an afterthought. You build to WCAG 2.2 AA and support that with automated checks in CI.
You have strong product judgement and stay pragmatic. You know the difference between a reusable pattern and a one-off, when consistency matters, and when the simpler 90% answer is the better product decision.
You are curious about how AI changes product development. You are excited to invent better ways for designers, engineers, and coding agents to build interfaces together.
Our frontend stack includes React, TypeScript, Tailwind, shadcn, Radix, and Base UI. We do not expect prior mastery of every tool, but you should be comfortable working at this level of the stack.
Bonus points for: multi-brand or white-label theming at scale; Figma variables, tokens, or Code Connect; MCP; AST codemods; custom linting or conformance tooling; or prior experience building systems that AI agents consume directly.
If the mission excites you but your experience isn’t a perfect 1:1 match, apply anyway. We care about craft, judgement, and potential more than matching every bullet.
You’ll be expected to work with AI-powered tools. Some we use:
GitHub Copilot / Claude Code
ChatGPT / Gemini / Claude
Notion AI (docs, knowledge, meeting notes)
Analytics & ML: Langfuse, PyTorch, Mastra
AI-enhanced testing & monitoring (e.g., generative QA, Grafana ML)
We don’t expect mastery of all — but we expect comfort learning, experimenting, and adopting AI responsibly.
Impact, not easy mode — your work matters, and you’ll feel it every day.
Ownership from day one — we don’t micromanage, we expect you to deliver.
The grind is real — priorities shift, and flexibility is sometimes needed to get things across the finish line. But so are the rewards: impact, growth, and a team that has your back.
The people are extraordinary — talented, driven, and fun to work with. You’ll be challenged, supported, and inspired in equal measure.
A yearly education budget and extra days off to use it.
A friendly and social company culture with movie nights, Friday bars, pub crawls, and more.
Free lunch every day.
Pension & health coverage to keep you secure for today and tomorrow.
Paid parental leave to support life's big moments.
Warrants program - be part of our growth story.
Flexible working hours; as long as you're at key meetings and delivering great work, we trust you to manage your schedule.
Please send us your application in English.
