The GIS Transportation Specialist is responsible for supporting the design, implementation, and maintenance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with a focus on transportation networks and infrastructure. This role involves collecting, analyzing, and managing spatial data related to roads, transit, traffic, and logistics to create maps, reports, and geospatial models that inform decision-making and support transportation and mobility projects across the organization.
The GIS Transportation Specialist will work closely with planners, engineers, GIS analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy, quality, and integrity of transportation-related GIS data. They will assist in data input, editing, and conversion from various sources, as well as perform network analysis, routing, and transportation modeling. The position also requires ensuring proper data storage, metadata documentation, and assisting in troubleshooting GIS-related issues to ensure transportation GIS systems function efficiently and effectively.
Data Collection and Input
• Collect, compile, and input transportation-related spatial data from various sources, including master plans, GPS data, satellite imagery, and other geospatial datasets.
• Ensure data is accurate, consistent, and aligned with transportation project specifications and organizational standards, resulting in high-quality datasets ready for analysis or integration into GIS platforms.
Data Editing and Maintenance
• Perform routine editing and updating of transportation GIS data layers (roads, transit networks, right-of-way, traffic zones), correcting errors and ensuring data integrity.
• Update databases with the latest transportation and mobility information, maintaining metadata for future reference to ensure accurate and reliable GIS databases.
Map Creation and Visualization
• Generate transportation maps, reports, diagrams, and other visual representations of geospatial data for internal teams, consultants, and client-facing deliverables.
• Ensure visualizations are clear, accurate, and meet project requirements, producing professional maps and dashboards for use in planning, reports, and decision-making.
Geospatial Analysis and Modelling
• Perform transportation-focused spatial analysis, such as network analysis, shortest path, service area, buffer zones, and accessibility studies, to support mobility and infrastructure projects.
• Create geospatial models to analyze travel patterns, congestion hotspots, and multimodal connectivity, generating reports and models that inform transportation planning and investment.
Quality Control and Data Validation
• Ensure the accuracy and completeness of transportation GIS data by performing validation checks, identifying inconsistencies, and resolving discrepancies.
• Conduct quality control assessments on maps, data layers, and spatial analyses to ensure reliable outputs that support project delivery.
Documentation and Reporting
• Maintain detailed documentation of transportation GIS processes, workflows, and metadata for datasets.
• Prepare regular reports on transportation GIS activities, providing insights into projects, challenges, and accomplishments to ensure transparency and continuity.
Field Surveys and Site Visits
• Conduct site inspections to verify transportation infrastructure status (roads, intersections, transit stations, pedestrian facilities).
• Perform transportation-related surveys, including road condition assessments, traffic data collection, as-built verification, and field GPS data capture.
Minimum Qualifications and Knowledge: A diploma or associate degree in GIS, Cartography, or a related technical field with relevant work experience, or Certification in GIS software (e.g., Esri ArcGIS, Arc Map Pro certification, or equivalent)
