Google seeks a Director of UX for Model Behavior to bridge human-centered design and ML engineering, shaping the UX and policies for AI features in Search. You will lead a multidisciplinary team, embed UX into the model development lifecycle, and define voice, tone, and guidelines for handling complex queries while establishing rubrics to reduce hallucinations and bias. Success hinges on senior cross functional leadership, RLHF and SFT experience, and the ability to influence stakeholders across a global product ecosystem. To apply, tailor your resume to show governance of model behavior with measurable impact and a track record turning ambiguity into scalable product strategies, plus collaboration with ML/Engineering.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Media, Communications, HCI, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience managing multi-disciplinary design and technical interaction teams.
  • Experience managing teams of integrated content specialists.
  • Experience in RLHF, model fine-tuning, and developing evaluation frameworks (e.g., SxS testing).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience fostering divergent design thinking, shepherding radical ideas that can truly evolve products.
  • Experience leading the model behavior vision and execution of large-scale products with a focus on localization, usability, and accessibility best practices for global AI platforms.
  • Excellent communication and scaled leadership experience, with the ability to lead model behavior in an ambiguous space, and work to define methods/approaches.
  • Curiosity and excellent technical aptitude to understand the global product ecosystem and influence cross-functional stakeholders across Google and drive scalable model design solutions.
  • Track record of building/scaling multidisciplinary teams within highly matrixed environments.

About the job

Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Google Search is transforming into an AI-powered knowledge companion, leveraging advanced AI to create seamless, conversational interactions that empower billions of users daily.

Our Model Behavior and Design teams architect the fundamental interaction paradigms of Google’s Search product. As the Director of UX for Model Behavior, you will bridge the gap between human-centered design and machine learning engineering. You will be responsible for shaping how users interact with our most advanced conversational agents and generative features—specifically defining the UX and behavioral heuristics for AI Overviews and AI Mode.

In this role, you will define the Search Model Behavior strategy, establishing the foundational frameworks for model persona, conversational architecture, and interaction principles. You will translate qualitative user needs into quantitative technical signals, ensuring that our AI experiences are helpful, safe, and deeply aligned with user intent.

In Google Search, we're reimagining what it means to search for information – any way and anywhere. To do that, we need to solve complex engineering challenges and expand our infrastructure, while maintaining a universally accessible and useful experience that people around the world rely on. In joining the Search team, you'll have an opportunity to make an impact on billions of people globally.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
