Description

Newsquest Scotland and Northern Ireland is looking for an Editor for the Impartial Reporter to oversee all aspects of editorial content for the publication.

This is a highly sought-after role in journalism, leading the team at a 201-year-old title.

Our new editor will ensure that the newspaper maintains its high standard of journalism, is impartial and covers a broad range of topics relevant to its readership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operation of the newsroom, ensuring that all editorial content is accurate, balanced, and in compliance with the newspaper's ethical standards and editorial policies.
  • Drive the team to deliver strong print circulation performance, as well as digital audience and subscription growth.
  • Work with reporters to generate story ideas and assignments, and edit news articles for content, style, and grammar.
  • Manage and mentor journalists, providing feedback, guidance, and training as needed.
  • Write editorials and opinion pieces as needed, providing a clear and compelling perspective on important issues.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Significant experience in local journalism, with a track record of producing high-quality, impactful reporting.
  • Strong writing, editing, and analytical skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Experience and skills in print production of newspapers, as well as familiarity with digital publishing platforms, social media and the use of AI in journalism.
  • An understanding of ethical journalism practices and standards.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse team of journalists.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team to achieve their best work.
  • A willingness to experiment with new technologies and strategies to engage readers.
