A Plumbing Draftsman is responsible for preparing accurate technical drawings and detailed layouts for plumbing systems used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They work closely with engineers, architects, and project managers to ensure plumbing designs comply with project specifications, local codes, and industry standards.

Job Description:

A Plumbing Draftsman creates detailed 2D and 3D drawings of plumbing systems, including water supply, drainage, sanitary, stormwater, and fire protection piping, using CAD and BIM software. They interpret architectural and engineering drawings, coordinate with other disciplines to resolve design clashes, and update drawings based on revisions and site requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare plumbing shop drawings, installation drawings, and as-built drawings.
  • Develop detailed layouts for water supply, drainage, sanitary, stormwater, and piping systems.
  • Produce drawings using AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or other drafting software.
  • Coordinate with architectural, structural, HVAC, and electrical teams to avoid clashes.
  • Review project specifications, design documents, and engineering calculations.
  • Ensure drawings comply with local building codes, plumbing standards, and client requirements.
  • Incorporate design revisions and maintain drawing documentation.
  • Assist in preparing material take-offs and quantity estimates.
  • Support engineers and project managers throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Maintain organized drawing records and document control.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting Technology, or a related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in plumbing drafting (or as required).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Navisworks, and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong understanding of plumbing systems, piping layouts, and building services.
  • Knowledge of local plumbing codes and construction standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail, communication, and coordination skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with BIM modeling and clash detection.
  • Knowledge of ASME, IPC, UPC, or local plumbing standards.
