Foodstuffs South Island seeks a senior Grocery Buyer to lead Grocery buying in Timaru using SAP. This full-time on-site role requires proven large-scale buying experience and strong commercial acumen, turning data into action as you analyse sales, trends and stock movements, monitor inventory, address gaps and overstocks, and lead in-store promotions while securing great supplier deals. You’ll work with suppliers and the retail operations team to bring plans to life on the shelf. Essential SAP and Excel skills, excellent communication, high attention to detail, integrity; knowledge of the Grocery Supply Code is a bonus. About the role: 

 

As our Grocery Buyer you will own the aisle - taking full responsibility for purchasing across our Grocery categories using SAP. 

 

From supplier to shelf, you’ll ensure the right products are in the right place at the right time.  Alongside this, you’ll be responsible for:

 

  • Ensuring our customers can get what they want, when they want it
  • Analysing sales, trends, and stock movements to drive smart buying and ranging decisions
  • Monitoring inventory levels – proactively actioning gaps, overstocks and supplier follow-ups
  • Managing in-store promotional activity and ensuring strong execution
  • Working closely with suppliers to secure great deals
  • Supporting the retail operations team – after all, they bring your work to life on the shelf!

 

We’d love you to apply if you have:

 

  • Proven experience with large scale buying (FMCG buying experience a bonus) 
  • Strong commercial acumen and confidence working with data to make and support decisions
  • Solid computer skills, including Excel (SAP experience is a bonus)
  • Excellent communication skills across all levels 
  • High attention to detail, integrity and the ability to think outside the square
  • Understanding of the Grocery Supply Code a bonus

 

This is a senior role and previous experience as a buyer in a large format retail environment is essential.

 

Hours: 

 

This is a full-time role (42.5 hours per week):

 

Sunday – Thursday, including an early start on Monday (5:00am)

 

Final hours will be discussed at the interview stage.
