Job Description

The Performance and Power Engineering Intern will be responsible for contributing to critical development projects. This role demands a high level of technical proficiency and attention to detail.

  • Contribute to the design, development, and support of new or existing HDD firmware, with a focus on performance and power features related to command execution, cache optimization, CPU utilization, servo/mechanical interactions, and overall system efficiency.
  • Implement, validate, and maintain performance and power components utilizing industry-standard development methodologies to ensure product quality and reliability.
  • Develop comprehensive test cases for firmware, performance, and power features to guarantee robust functionality and optimal performance.
  • Engage in critical design meetings, test planning sessions, and code reviews to ensure alignment with project goals and quality standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with internal and cross-functional teams to develop innovative, high-quality firmware solutions that meet or exceed performance benchmarks.
  • Meticulously document findings in the bug tracking system, create and update technical documentation, and prepare detailed presentations for communicating complex ideas and results to stakeholders.

This position is part of our Early Career program at WD. Our Early Career program is designed to support individuals beginning their professional career by providing the foundational training through a structured onboarding, mentorship, and development curriculum.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently pursuing of a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related fields is imperative.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States is a non-negotiable requirement. Western Digital will not initiate or sponsor any immigration cases for this position.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in critical programming languages such as C, C++, Python, or other relevant languages is essential.
  • Proven expertise or substantial coursework in structured code development and debugging methodologies is crucial.
  • While not mandatory, knowledge or experience with interface bus analyzers, SATA/SAS protocols, and MATLAB will be viewed as a significant advantage.

CRITICAL SKILLS

  • The ability to function effectively within a multi-site agile development team is paramount.
  • Exceptional problem-solving capabilities, coupled with superior communication skills (both written and verbal), are indispensable.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills are vital for success in this collaborative environment.

Compensation & Benefits Details

  • An employee’s pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills, ability, knowledge of the job; (3) performance, contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
  • The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in California, Colorado, New York or remote jobs that can be performed in California, Colorado and New York.  This range may be modified in the future.
  • If your position is non-exempt, you are eligible for overtime pay pursuant to company policy and applicable laws.  You may also be eligible for shift differential pay, depending on the shift to which you are assigned.
  • You will be eligible to be considered for bonuses under either Western Digital’s Short Term Incentive Plan (“STI Plan”) or the Sales Incentive Plan (“SIP”) which provides incentive awards based on Company and individual performance, depending on your role and your performance. You may be eligible to participate in our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs) or cash equivalents, pursuant to the terms of the LTI plan. Please note that not all roles are eligible to participate in the LTI program, and not all roles are eligible for equity under the LTI plan.
