Maintenance Manager
TFE HotelsTFE Hotels is a leading hospitality group in New Zealand with a portfolio that spans brands like A by Adina, Adina Hotels, Vibe Hotels, Quincy, Travelodge Hotels, Rendezvous and Collection by TFE Hotels. They’re currently seeking a Maintenance Manager to oversee a Canterbury property in Christchurch. The role is full-time, permanent and onsite in Christchurch Central City, NZ-CAN, 8011, NZL, with a salary between 66,000.00 NZD and 70,000.00 NZD per year. It’s a hands-on leadership position that suits someone who likes getting into the detail of building systems, coordinating with contractors and guiding a small team to keep guest areas running smoothly.
In this role, you’ll influence everything from minor repairs to major projects, keeping facilities dependable, safe and compliant. You’ll work with contractors and internal teams to resolve issues promptly and maintain high standards across guest spaces, back of house and plant rooms. The job sits onsite at a busy Canterbury hotel, and you’ll be expected to bring clear, practical communication to every shift and handover.
Think of this as a senior maintenance position that blends day-to-day operations with project oversight, budget awareness and risk management. You’ll be a hands-on problem solver who contributes to capital planning while ensuring the property runs smoothly for guests and colleagues alike.
Keeping the hotel running in Canterbury
You’ll own the maintenance strategy and planning, tackling ongoing issues that could affect guest comfort or safety. When repairs are required in guestrooms, you’ll manage the work and bring in specialists or contractors if activities lie outside your team’s technical scope. On shift, you’ll be on call for urgent maintenance requests, and if you can’t attend directly you’ll brief the manager on duty to arrange additional help and then follow up to ensure a swift resolution.
Maintenance is more than reacting to problems. You’ll conduct routine cleaning of air conditioning filters, service plant rooms and equipment, and perform preventative maintenance checks. You’ll drive continual improvement of the preventative maintenance system and align with Asset Services Audit guidelines to keep standards high.
As needed, you’ll take the Project Manager hat and coordinate major capital works with the hotel, council and regulatory bodies to ensure a smooth implementation with minimal disruption. You’ll prepare cost estimates for significant work orders, contribute to the hotel’s capital expenditure planning for head office and owners, and monitor the engineering/maintenance budget closely. Health and safety is a priority, and you’ll oversee contracts with subcontractors, liaise with departments to keep plant and machinery well managed, maintain spare parts inventory, and support energy, water and waste reduction efforts. Reporting is part of the job, with monthly engineering/maintenance updates, and you’ll continuously explore new suppliers and contractors to improve plant performance while controlling costs. You may be asked to handle basic facilities requests and guest luggage when needed, and you’ll always keep safety policies front and center with clear shift handovers.
What you’ll bring to the team
Must-have requirements include a track record in similar maintenance leadership and the flexibility to work across shifts, including early, late and overnight coverage as needed to support the night function. You’ll also need weekend and public holiday availability, and a formal pathway that demonstrates you can manage facilities at a hotel property with comparable scale.
- You have at least two years of relevant work experience in a comparable role with a comparable employer; or you hold a relevant diploma and at least one year of relevant managerial experience.
- You can work shift patterns that may include early and late hours, overnight coverage when required, and weekends/public holidays as part of the schedule.
Nice-to-have touches
These qualities aren’t required, but they help you stand out in the process:
- Strong communication skills with proficient English; being multilingual is a plus.
- A polished, professional appearance and uniform discipline that you also model for your team.
- Experience guiding general front desk procedures, night audits and other operational tasks beyond maintenance.
- Previous maintenance or night manager experience at a property of a similar style and size, including team leadership.
- Familiarity with Protel Property Management System.
- Experience supporting logistics tasks such as processing invoices, following up on payments, batching and processing bank statements, answering account inquiries and handling weekly commission processes.
- Willingness to respond to basic facilities requests and to assist guests with luggage when needed.
Advice for applicants
Lead your resume with a concise summary of your most relevant hospitality maintenance leadership, especially where you’ve managed a team and steered capital works. If you have two years in a similar role, name the employer and outline the scope of responsibilities up front, highlighting any major projects you led.
Back up the must-haves with concrete examples. Show times you handled urgent after-hours repairs, how you coordinated with contractors, and the budget or cost estimates you controlled. If you can, quantify results, downtime avoided, cost savings, or improved uptime on critical plant.
Be ready to discuss how you structure shift work, ensure safety compliance, and coordinate across departments. You may be asked to walk through a capital project you managed, describing stakeholder management, regulatory liaison and how you minimised guest disruption.
Ask a smart question about the property’s current preventative maintenance program and how Asset Services Audit guidelines are implemented on site, or how energy and water-saving measures are tracked and fed into capital planning.
