CERN is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the ALICE detector upgrade for LS3 and the ALICE3 project for LS4, including installation of the new beam pipe, silicon tracker and forward calorimeter, and to supervise a multidisciplinary team on site. You will design metallic and carbon‑composite detector structures, back them with structural analyses, and ensure safety and performance under mechanical, thermal and dynamic loads while coordinating with detector experts and CERN teams. Requirements include a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, proven CATIA CAD experience, ANSYS analysis skills, and experience leading technicians and contractors. Tailor your CV to show leadership, on-site delivery, teamwork, readiness to work in radiation areas, and willingness to learn French.
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Introduction:
The ALICE Technical Coordination team is expanding to address the increased mechanical-engineering workload associated with the scheduled Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Long Shutdown periods in 2026-2028 (LS3) and 2033-2034 (LS4), including detector decommissioning and installation activities, the development of the entirely new ALICE 3 detector, and the preparation of future detector infrastructure.
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will contribute to the execution of LS3 installation activities and the design and construction of the ALICE 3 detector system, working within a multidisciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and designers.
