Alternative Heat is expanding its BIM capability with a dedicated MEP BIM Engineer in Birmingham. The team focuses on delivering accurate, coordinated, data-rich 3D models to guide design, construction and installation, working closely with design engineers, project managers and site teams to keep mechanical and electrical services fully integrated and clash-free before build starts. This role suits someone who enjoys practical, buildable solutions, collaboration across disciplines and contributing to sustainable, offsite construction practices.

Reporting to the Head of Building Services, this permanent, onsite position is built for a hands-on practitioner who can drive digital delivery, help reduce embodied carbon and support lean construction workflows. The right candidate will be comfortable coordinating with prefabrication partners and aligning model data with fabrication and site teams across a growing project pipeline.

The role sits in a company that emphasises sustainable building practices and a proactive approach to digital delivery. It’s a good match for someone who wants to contribute to high-quality, bespoke MEP solutions through robust BIM coordination and data-driven decision making.

Day-to-day you’ll keep the models moving

You will develop and sustain fully coordinated MEP models using Revit and Navisworks, weaving together architectural and structural inputs so the designs are buildable and clash-free. As prefabricated solutions come into play, you’ll liaise with the fabrication teams to produce fabrication-ready models, create detailed spool drawings, and assemble construction drawing packs to support offsite manufacturing, typically at LOD500.

Leading model coordination workshops will be part of your routine, with regular reviews involving consultants, suppliers and site teams to resolve issues before they affect the build. You’ll also own the Common Data Environment, managing version control and data history to keep every stakeholder aligned throughout the project lifecycle.

During construction, you’ll work closely with the site team to validate installations, updating the models with redlines and site markups and handling change requests. As projects near handover, you’ll produce accurate as-installed models for commissioning and handover, and you’ll use BIM data to support decarbonisation goals, tracking embodied carbon and energy strategies as part of the project’s sustainability objectives.

Must-haves and nice-to-haves

Must-haves: a solid background in MEP with hands-on experience in Revit and Navisworks to develop and coordinate integrated models; a proven ability to coordinate with design and fabrication teams to keep models clash-free; familiarity with prefabrication workflows and delivering LOD500, fabrication-ready models and appropriate construction drawing packs; experience managing a Common Data Environment with clear version control and data history; and the skill to update models in response to site changes and deliver as-installed models for handover.

  • A strong MEP background with practical Revit and Navisworks skills to build coordinated, clash-free models
  • Proven track record coordinating across design, fabrication and construction teams to keep models aligned
  • Experience supporting offsite fabrication, including producing LOD500 models and fabrication-ready outputs
  • Ability to manage a Common Data Environment with version control and a clear data history
  • Capability to produce construction drawing packs and detailed spool drawings for fabrication
  • Experience updating models as work progresses on site and delivering as-installed models for commissioning

Nice-to-haves: additional strengths that would help but aren’t required. These include a background in driving BIM-led decarbonisation efforts, leading model coordination workshops, and familiarity with lean construction or offsite prefabrication projects that align with sustainability goals.

  • Experience using BIM data to support embodied carbon tracking and energy strategies
  • Experience chairing model coordination workshops with multidisciplinary teams
  • Familiarity with lean construction principles and offsite fabrication projects

Pay, benefits and practical details

Salary is described as competitive and will be based on experience. The role is a permanent, full-time position, onsite in Birmingham, with hours from Monday to Thursday 8am–5pm and Friday 8am–3pm. The post reports to the Head of Building Services.

Advice for applicants

Lead with your Revit and Navisworks know‑how in your resume, and give a concrete example of a project where you produced fully coordinated MEP models that stayed clash-free from design through to construction.

Show how you’ve supported prefabrication by detailing how you created fabrication-ready models, constructed spool drawings and assembled the necessary packs for offsite manufacturing, ideally at a held level like LOD500.

Demonstrate your leadership in model coordination by citing a workshop you chaired and how you kept version control and data history in the Common Data Environment, plus how you reconciled redlines and changes from site.

Discuss how BIM data fed into decarbonisation goals, embodied carbon tracking, material selections and energy strategies, and be ready to talk about how you’ve aligned digital delivery with lean construction practices.

Smart questions to ask: what BIM standards and CDE platform the team uses, how they balance prefabrication with on-site assembly on current projects, and how they measure progress toward decarbonisation milestones within the BIM workflow.
