Job Description

Veolia operates and maintains both the drinking water treatment plant and wastewater treatment plant in Moosonee, Ontario.

The Operator in Charge (OIC) - Water and Wastewater Treatment  position is located in Moosonee, ON, and requires the successful candidate to relocate to the community. A northern living allowance is provided for working in Moosonee.

Operator in Charge (OIC) - Water and Wastewater Treatment  is responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of both water and wastewater treatment facilities and must therefore hold valid water treatment and wastewater treatment certifications. Key responsibilities include conducting laboratory testing, making operational decisions, utilizing SCADA systems, preparing regulatory reports, operating treatment equipment, and maintaining effective communication with team members

Main Responsibilities: 

  1. Adjusts, inspects and evaluates processes and equipment that control the operation and effectiveness of water and wastewater systems (WWT, WWC, WT, WD) in order to optimize performance, maintain regulatory compliance, and minimize local and/or system wide adverse impacts while taking into consideration cost, equipment capabilities, environmental impacts and OH&S.
  2. Operates and monitors the performance of system process equipment and related appurtenances, including but not limited to valves, gates, pumps, compressors, engines, electric motors/generators, HVAC systems, chemical dosing equipment, etc.
  3. Makes process adjustments, operational decisions and addresses/responds to alarm conditions to ensure efficient, compliant and safe operation within established performance, regulatory and quality limits.
  4. Maintains records and documentation of all process and/or work area activities using either manual or computerized systems including but not limited to plant logbooks, computerized databases, etc.
  5. Accountable for the efficient operation, in compliance with applicable regulations, of all processes within the water and wastewater systems as well as for personal performance and promoting optimal team performance.
  6. Collects samples, perform routine laboratory tests, analysis and calculations, and records results.
  7. Interprets laboratory results (internal and external) and makes adjustments as necessary.
  8. Identifies changes in operational conditions and interprets information in order to implement corrective actions and/or troubleshoot process issues.
  9. Utilizes various tools to perform operational duties including but not limited to Process Control System (PCS), other SCADA systems, Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Work Management System (WMS).
  10. Performs preventative maintenance diagnostics, and routine preventative maintenance duties such as monitoring equipment for excessive vibration or high temperatures.
  11. Monitors and assesses equipment performance and maintains process operations by using CLAIR (clean, lubricate, adjust, inspect, repair).

Qualifications

 

  • OWWCO - certification: must hold a valid class 1 water and wastewater treatment as well as collection and distribution certification.
    •  Other certifications are highly desirable: first aid, confined space, etc.
  • Minimum 5 years experience as an water treatment and/or wastewater treatment operator.
  • Able to relocate to Moosonee.
  • Able to work on weekends 
  • Able to be on call and respond to emergency (once every 2 weeks typically)
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, preferably have some trade licensing (eg. Millwright, plumbing and etc.).
  • Must be or become proficient in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc.).
  • Attention to details and capability to accurately follow procedures.
  • Analytical skills to understand data and graphs. Capability to make decisions based on data.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively in english both written and spoken for operational processes, safety and quality Instructions (reading text, document comprehension, numeracy, writing and Oral communication).
  • Ability to perform basic math.
  • Deadline oriented.
  • Must work well with others.
  • Must have good hand eye coordination (Repetitive motions required).
  • Reliable and dependable in regards to start and finish times as it impacts the operations.

Work Environment:

Permanent position, offered on a full-time basis, with working schedules from Monday to Friday, daytime. 

  • Hours of Work: 
    • 40 Hour work week
    • Work weekends and stat holidays when required
    • Work a rotating on-call schedule when required
    •  Respond to provide assistance when required
  • Physical Demands:
    • 75% Walking, 15% Standing, 5% sitting, 5% driving
    •  Must be able to lift and carry up to 55 pounds (25 kgs)
    •  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch and enter confined spaces.
    •  May be required to use ladders or stairs.
    •  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Requires close visual observation to detect process non-conformance and machine malfunction.
    •  Spends 100% of time in operations and maintenance environment. May need to work outside in inclement weather conditions and drive company vehicle to perform duties
  • Licensing Requirements:
    • Valid MECP Water / Wastewater operating certificate(s) and or licenses as per facility requirement(s)
      •  Level 1 Water and Level 1 Wastewater or higher
    •  Valid Class G Driver’s License
  • Salary:
    • Compensation package includes an hourly wage of $32-$40, plus a northern living allowance of $500 paid bi-weekly. Employer-provided housing accommodation is included as part of the total compensation.
