The School of Environment is home to a vibrant and diverse community of students, academics and professional staff pursuing research and teaching across the social and natural sciences.

Alongside Earth Science, the School brings together internationally recognised disciplinary programmes in Geography, Geology, Geophysics and Geographical Information Science, as well as interdisciplinary programmes in Environmental Management, Environmental Science.

This creates a highly collaborative environment where researchers can connect across disciplines and explore new approaches to some of the most important environmental challenges facing our world.

Earth Science is an integral part of this broader community, providing opportunities to collaborate nationally and internationally and to contribute to research that connects past, present and future Earth system processes.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking a researcher and educator with a PhD in Earth Science, Geography, Environmental Science, Evolutionary Biology or a related discipline, and a developing record of high-quality research publications.

This is an exciting opportunity for an academic who is passionate about research, enjoys working collaboratively and wants to contribute to the development of the next generation of Earth and environmental scientists.

We welcome researchers who use field, laboratory, analytical, computational, and/or modelling approaches and who are excited by opportunities to work across disciplines.

Ngā Haepapa Matua | Key Responsibilities (not limited to):

Contribute to the teaching and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate Earth Science courses

Conduct research and contribute to the development of an independent research programme in Earth Science

Supervise postgraduate research students in Earth Science and related areas, supporting their academic and research development.

Contribute meaningfully to the School's collegial working environment by working collaboratively with staff, students, and relevant external and professional organisations.

This is a full-time (40 hrs per week) permanent role

The remuneration is between $99,788 - $109,496 per annum, dependent on skills and experience 

He kōrero mōu | About you

We are looking for an engaged, forward-thinking, and collegial academic who is excited about research and enjoys collaborating with colleagues and students.

You will hold a PhD in Earth Science, Geological Science, Geography, Environmental Science, Evolutionary Biology, or a closely related discipline.

You will also bring:

• a track record of research demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, appropriate to your career stage;
• research expertise in Earth Science, with alignment to paleoclimate and/or climate-linked Earth system science;
• experience in, or a strong interest in tertiary level teaching;
• excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
• the ability to work effectively as part of a diverse and collaborative team;
• a collegial approach and enthusiasm for engaging with colleagues and students across disciplines; and
• the potential to develop an internationally recognised research programme.

Teaching experience is preferred, as is experience demonstrating the ability to contribute to Earth Science teaching and research programs.
