He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Our Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO) is recruiting for a seasoned and motivated Principal Advisor, Māori Outcomes for a full-time permanent opportunity. This role plays a pivotal part in bringing Māori outcomes to life within Auckland’s urban regeneration programmes—turning strategic intent into tangible, on-the-ground results. You will be the bridge between high-level strategy and delivery, ensuring that Iwi Ora and Te Taiao Ora outcomes are embedded throughout the entire development lifecycle, from planning to implementation. This is a key opportunity for a strong systems thinker and relationship-builder who can champion Māori aspirations and lead integrated delivery across complex projects and diverse teams.

Key responsibilities and strategic focus for this role is based on three key pillars:

• Integrated project delivery and governance – embed Māori outcomes across projects, ensuring mana whenua priorities are reflected through all stages of design and delivery.
• Systemic change and advocacy – identify and address barriers within Council processes, driving policy and procedural reform to strengthen Māori participation and influence.
• Capability building and cultural leadership – provide cultural guidance and support that builds organisational confidence in Te Ao Māori, Te Reo, Tikanga, and Te Tiriti-led practice.

Kōrero mōu: About you

We’re looking for an experienced leader with a strong background in local, central, or iwi organisations, who understands how to navigate complex relationships across multiple iwi stakeholder groups within Tāmaki Makaurau. You’ll bring deep knowledge of Mana Whenua and Mātāwaka interests, and how these connect to Auckland Council’s urban regeneration and development processes. A solid understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its practical application within a local government setting is essential, along with familiarity with Auckland Council, the Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO), and their shared vision for Tāmaki Makaurau

Key job requirements include:

• A tertiary qualification in design, planning, law, property, or a related discipline is desirable.
• Proficiency and confidence in Te Reo Māori, including correct pronunciation, is highly valued.
