Principal Mechanical Static Engineer
WorleyWorley, a global player in energy, chemicals and resources with roots in Australia, is seeking a Principal Mechanical Static Engineer to join its Abu Dhabi team. The role is full-time and onsite, based in ARE-AD-Abu Dhabi City. This is an individual contributor position reporting to the Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineer. The posting date is Oct 10, 2026, with an unposting date of Jan 8, 2027. The company’s work spans the asset lifecycle, from consulting through design, procurement and construction, with a focus on sustainable solutions. If you’re a senior mechanical engineer who can own complex static equipment work and mentor others, this could be a good fit.
The right candidate will thrive in a role that blends deep technical leadership with hands-on delivery on large oil and gas or petrochemical projects. You’ll be part of a team that interfaces with customers, suppliers and contractors, guiding discipline execution and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. The opportunity is particularly suited to someone who has spent years refining their craft in the Middle East, enjoys client workshops, and wants to shape project outcomes from concept through detailed design and delivery.
Engineering the static backbone of projects in Abu Dhabi
In practice, you’ll steer the mechanical discipline as it relates to static equipment, making sure the approach to design and selection follows recognized codes and customer specs. You’ll champion the integrity of equipment like tanks, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and similar process packages, validating data sheets and ensuring that fabrication, testing and installation requirements, such as PWHT, NDE, material selection, nozzle details and thickness checks, align with the project’s expectations. Your expertise will also guide the development of basis of design and equipment philosophies, and you’ll help ensure a coherent, cross-discipline execution strategy from concept through FEED and detailed design.
Beyond design, you’ll collaborate with sourcing and procurement teams, contributing to the discipline’s execution plan, reviewing vendor information, and supporting the management of third parties and interface between disciplines. You’ll participate in design reviews and client workshops, including HAZID and HAZOP discussions, constructability assessments, and reliability and quality reviews. The role also involves coordinating with other disciplines to resolve issues, supporting site visits where needed, and helping to plan the discipline’s quality and progress through the project lifecycle.
The must-have foundations and desirable extras
The team is looking for a candidate who can demonstrate both breadth and depth in mechanical static engineering, with a track record of delivering big, complex projects.
- A four- or five-year technical degree in science or engineering, plus formal leadership and project-execution training, and active licensure with the local engineering authority where required by law
- About 15 or more years of relevant discipline experience, with a solid grasp of codes, standards, and manufacturing practices, and proven ability to estimate costs and contribute to proposals
- Expert knowledge in the design and selection of static equipment and related fabrication and testing requirements under ASME VIII, including PWHT, NDE, materials, nozzle details, construction codes, fireproofing, insulation, wind and seismic loads, equipment interfaces and thickness analyses
- Experience developing equipment specifications for tanks, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, air fin coolers and similar packages, plus management of mechanical data sheets and deliverables quality
- Strong understanding of controls, power supply and utility needs, and environmental regulation requirements, with an advanced grasp of metallurgy specifications and the ability to oversee design verification and technical peer reviews
- Proven ability to support procurement and package management, including ITPs, vendor information reviews, sub-supplier coordination and involvement in FAT and inspection releases, along with site visits to client sites
- Experience in interdisciplinary coordination and active participation in client workshops covering design reviews, HAZID, HAZOP, constructability, sustainability, reliability and quality
- Background in Basis of Design development and equipment selection philosophy, plus knowledge of international codes, standards and regulatory requirements applicable to mechanical static engineering for oil and gas facilities
- Strong track record in procurement support, data sheet development, and engagement with manufacturers, weld procedures and testing documentation
- Comfort collaborating with client representatives on site visits and information gathering
- Desirable training in risk management or quality assurance
- Experience in project leadership or specialized expertise in one or more regulatory, code or manufacturing domains
Schedule, location and practicalities
The role is a full-time, employee position based onsite in Abu Dhabi City (ARE-AD-Abu Dhabi City). The work arrangement is on site, and the job sits at an individual contributor level within a global engineering team. The posting indicates the role sits within Worley’s Middle East operations, and it values a strong hands-on approach to discipline work, coordination and client engagement across the asset lifecycle.
Your responsibilities will include planning the discipline’s quality, monitoring outputs, and supporting project-wide actions to keep the program on track. You’ll work to ensure health, safety and environmental requirements are met and that the mechanical deliverables integrate smoothly with other disciplines and with vendor packages. The job requires effective communication with clients and other teams, and the ability to adapt to multi-project environments common in large-scale energy projects.
Advice for applicants
Lead with your most relevant, high-level credentials. Place your four- or five-year technical degree and active local licensure up front, then highlight your 15+ years of experience and your strongest track record in mechanical static work on oil and gas facilities, especially if you’ve touched ASME VIII design, PWHT and NDE programs.
Show concrete examples of how you’ve developed equipment specifications and mechanical data sheets, and how your work influenced project outcomes. If you’ve led ITPs or procurement-support activities, describe the scope, the stakeholders involved and the impact on schedules or budgets, with a brief quantify when possible.
Be ready to talk about your participation in client workshops and design reviews, including HAZID/HAZOP, constructability, sustainability and quality assurance processes. Prepare a specific anecdote about a design decision you influenced that improved project delivery or safety outcomes.
Think through a thoughtful question to ask at the interview, such as how Worley approaches Basis of Design development for static equipment on large Middle East projects, or how the Abu Dhabi team coordinates across disciplines to balance time, cost and safety in complex packages.
