Canadian Natural Resources invites a Process Safety Engineering Student to Calgary for a 12-month term starting May 2027. You will work with Operations, Process Engineering and Asset Integrity teams to support risk management across Alberta, Saskatchewan and BC, participating in PHA, risk assessments and failure analyses, and helping develop mitigation strategies. Candidates should be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree (Chemical Engineering preferred; other disciplines considered), be safety oriented with leadership and problem solving, physically and mentally fit, and hold a valid Class 5 Alberta license. The Opportunity: 

Ever wondered how large industrial facilities identify and manage risk before incidents occur? Join our Process Safety team and gain hands-on experience applying risk management principles that help ensure the safe and reliable operation of some of Canada's largest energy assets.

Our Process Safety team identifies, evaluates, and manages process safety risks across Canadian Natural's operations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. Through activities such as Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), risk assessments, inspection deferral studies, and incident investigations, the team supports safe operations and continuous improvement.

As a Process Safety Engineering Student, you'll work closely with Operations, Process Engineering, Asset Integrity & Reliability Engineering, and other technical teams. You'll gain exposure to process safety systems, regulatory requirements, corporate standards, risk assessment methodologies, and the application of Canadian Natural's Corporate Risk Matrix. You'll also learn Root Cause Analysis (RCA) techniques and contribute to initiatives that support safe, reliable, and efficient operations.

Key Accountabilities: 

  • Participate in risk reviews and support engineering assessments for new and existing risks
  • Review and track Key Performance Indicators to ensure operating assets are being run and maintained
  • Provide process safety and integrity support to ongoing operation, maintenance and new projects
  • Participate and perform failure analysis of failed components
  • Provide recommendations for repair and develop mitigation strategies

What You Bring to The Role:

  • Currently enrolled in bachelor’s degree program in Chemical engineering preferred, all other engineering disciplines will be considered
  • Positive attitude and eagerness to learn.
  • Required to be physically and mentally fit for work.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel; experience with Power BI, Spotfire, SQL, or Python is considered an asset.
  • Responsible attitude towards safety, demonstrate leadership and enjoy problem solving
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license or an equivalent out of province license
  • A pre-employment drug screening test must be successfully completed
