Quality Assurance Specialist

Halifax, NS (John Savage) – On-site – Full-time

Position Summary

We have a current vacancy for a Quality Assurance Specialist to join our Team in Halifax, NS (John Savage). The Quality Assurance Specialist will apply technical knowledge and expertise with respect to Quality Assurance and Quality Control and is responsible for ensuring that the Thales Chorus 2.0 business management system and program quality processes are implemented and effective in delivering quality across assigned projects. 
The Quality Assurance Specialist will work closely with the Quality Assurance Manager to help develop a culture of quality and customer satisfaction and will help to identify and implement continuous improvement actions in order to meet the objectives of operational performance and customer satisfaction.

Essential Functions

  • Plan and lead quality assurance and quality control activities on the MWAV project
  • Ensure incoming material and project deliverables comply with the Customer's requirements and with the applicable regulations and standards.
  • Participate in quality team activities in support of ISO 9001:2015 Certification audits and assessments.
  • Lead internal and supplier audits, work with suppliers to improve their quality and performance.
  • Support and engage with our client’s Quality Assurance Representatives (QARs) for audits, inspections, non-conformances, corrective actions, and other quality related inquiries.
  • Support the project teams in applying processes, identifying risks and resolving problems.
  • Investigate quality related problems by applying the Eight Disciplines (8D) Problem Solving approach to determine possible root causes and corrective actions to drive resolution of found non-conformances.
  • Evaluate subcontractors' quality procedures and services. Prepare written reports of any subcontracted work that fails inspection.
  • Read, interpret, and apply technical data such as blueprints, engineering drawings, product specifications, or technical manuals.
  • Assist and participate in witness/hold points ensuring subcontractors and material are in compliance with the contract/specification.
  • Assist and review submittals of inspection test plans, maintains quality records and other QA documentation as required.
  • Raise and Manage NCR’s and CAR’s.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Proven prior experience in Quality Assurance and Quality Control, or related technical discipline.
  • Working knowledge / proficiency of DND regulatory requirements, Military standards and regulatory agencies/ institutions such as ABS and Lloyds. 
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018
  • Being able to plan, execute and report internal audits/assessments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to deal diplomatically with people at all levels.
  • Ability to problem solve, with a high attention to detail.
  • Possess a minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience in a quality assurance field associated with vessel construction, refits or maintenance within the last 10 years.
  • Possess a post-secondary diploma, or a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Preferred Qualifications

• ASQ: CQA, CQE, CSQP or equivalent is an asset.

• Bachelors degree in Electronics, or Engineering and/or significant relevant technical experience.

• Experience in Naval, Marine or Heavy Industry experience is an asset

• Certified Auditor or Lead Auditor for ISO 9001 is an asset.

Physical Demands

Primarily office work; some flexibility to work from home but expected to be in office as required to support the business. Some physical labour related to incoming and final inspection of material. Some field work possible at the dockyard and on ships. Occasional Travel on as required basis, primarily within Canada.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash (TTC) 80,000 – 90,000 CAD Annual.

Where a position falls within this range is also dependent on other factors including – but not limited to – the employee’s career path history, competencies, skills and performance, as well as the company’s annual salary budget, the customer’s program requirements, and the company’s internal equity.
