UNIT SUMMARY
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10-bed state-of-the-art critical care unit designed to meet the needs of our patients and families. Our Department provides comprehensive services for a wide variety of critically ill medical and surgical patients with acute, life-threatening disease and injury.
The PICU provides intensive care for a wide range of complex, rapidly changing medical, surgical and traumatic disorders occurring in pediatric patients aged 18 and under. Areas of subspecialty care includes congenital heart disease, cardiovascular surgery, respiratory failure, neurosurgery. immunodeficiencies, hematologic and oncologic emergencies, sepsis, and multi-organ system dysfunction. Available advanced treatment modalities include cardiovascular surgery (neonatal, pediatric, and cardiac ECMO), high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, non-invasive ventilation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ( NICU) is a 21 bed designated Level lllb Unit providing the highest level of intensive care to the most vulnerable and severely ill preterm and term infants. Our NICU provides leading academic health services including surgical and sub-specialty services for infants with congenital abnormalities, neurosurgical disorders, cardiovascular anomalies, sepsis, and genetic disorders. Available advanced treatment modalities include high frequency ventilation, JET ventilation, Nitric Oxide therapy, non-invasive ventilation and therapeutic hypothermia.
As a member of the Critical Care Flex Team, you will be trained in both NICU and PICU. CHEO provides an extensive orientation and support period to ensure a smooth transition in to practice on the unit.
In keeping with the mission statement of the hospital and the patient service unit, the nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for individual patients/families.

Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process.
