The village operates as part of Summerset’s bigger mission to bring the best of life to residents, guided by a team united around care, teamwork, and high standards. In a resident-directed care environment, the nurse leads clinical care and partners with a capable team to support residents over the long term. The role emphasizes maintaining quality of life, making thoughtful clinical choices, and fostering relationships with residents and their families to ensure they feel heard and supported.

Care on the clock at Boulcott village

On a day-to-day basis you’ll tend to residents’ needs, from routine clinical duties to end-of-life considerations, while helping to shape and monitor long-term care plans and carry out clinical assessments. On some shifts you’ll take charge of the care centre, making timely clinical decisions to keep care safe and consistent. You’ll deliver planned nursing care and assess progress in partnership with each resident and their family, with the aim of enhancing daily life. You’ll also guide caregivers on shift and work to cultivate trusted relationships with residents and their loved ones.

You'll need:

  • A valid New Zealand registration and an active Practising Certificate
  • A genuine interest in working with older people and an understanding of how clinical services are delivered in a retirement village
  • A demonstrated ability to lead, stay calm under pressure and show emotional resilience
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with a diverse range of people, from residents and families to colleagues

Pay, perks and practical details

The role is onsite at Summerset’s Boulcott village in Wellington and follows a four-days-on, two-days-off pattern, with shifts starting at 2AM or 2PM.

Summerset offers a benefits package that supports you professionally and personally, including:

  • Weekend additional penal hourly rates apply
  • Southern Cross Health Essentials Insurance
  • Days assigned to professional development and access to external training
  • Paid time off for PDRP

Tips for applicants

Put your NZ Registration and Practising Certificate front and centre on your resume, and lead with your strongest aged-care experience, especially any work in a retirement village with resident-directed care.

Show evidence of leadership, calmness under pressure and emotional resilience by sharing specific moments from your practice where you guided a team, navigated a challenging situation, or supported a resident and their family through a difficult time.

Prepare for interviews by thinking through how you implement resident-directed care in everyday practice, how you communicate with residents and families, and how you mentor or guide caregivers on shift.

Consider asking how the village supports ongoing professional development, what day-to-day collaboration with families looks like, and how success in delivering high-quality, resident-centered care is measured.
