Summary

The Research Accounting Specialist supports the financial management of sponsored projects from billing through closeout. This role prepares invoices and reports, monitors outstanding payments, and keeps grant records accurate and up to date. The position works closely with sponsors and internal departments to resolve financial issues and provide supporting documentation. It also helps ensure that sponsored project activity follows applicable sponsor requirements, accounting standards, and institutional procedures.

 

This position is remote within Texas.

Job Duties

  • Creates invoices and financial reports for sponsored projects and makes sure they are completed according to sponsor guidelines and due dates.
  • Checks transactions, account balances, and backup documentation to find discrepancies and determine whether corrections are needed.
  • Updates grant and financial information in the appropriate systems so records remain accurate and current.
  • Contacts sponsors about unpaid invoices and helps address billing or payment issues.
  • Collects and prepares supporting documents for sponsor inquiries, audits, and project closeouts.Keeps financial records and documentation organized and complete for future reference.
  • Makes sure financial work follows institutional procedures, sponsor terms, and applicable accounting standards.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field. Four years of relevant experience may substitute for degree requirement. 
  • No experience required with Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in a research academic setting or comparable environment, a plus.
  • High proficiency in Excel.
