The AA is hiring for Roadside Rescue Patrol in St Neots. This is a full-time, onsite role with an average 40-hour week and a range of shift patterns you can pick from to fit your life. The company is the UK’s largest motoring organisation, and in this job you’ll be the friendly face members rely on when they’re stranded, helping them get back on the road safely and confidently. It’s a hands-on role for someone who enjoys problem-solving on the move and taking pride in delivering real service when it matters most.

As a Roadside Rescue Patrol, you’ll begin and end your day at your driveway, with pay starting from when you climb into your van and continuing until you return home. You’ll work largely on your own across varied locations and conditions, while remaining a valued part of a supportive team. Your technical knowledge and clear communication will shape a positive customer experience, and you’ll use calm, practical problem-solving to handle a wide range of roadside situations.

On the road with the aa

Starting and finishing on your driveway, you’re paid for the time you’re in the van from the moment you set out to the moment you get back. You’ll cover different sites and conditions, but you’ll still be backed by the resources and technology that the AA provides. The role is autonomous by design, yet you’ll stay connected to a team that’s there to support you when you need it, ensuring every call ends with a safe, clear outcome for the member.

You’ll bring practical technical know-how to each encounter and speak plainly with customers to keep them informed and reassured. When a breakdown occurs, you’ll respond with a hands-on approach, applying your skills to diagnose and resolve issues on the spot where possible, while keeping safety front and centre for everyone involved.

What you need to bring to the road

Here’s what the AA requires for this patrol role. The list is short and pointed, focusing on qualifications, licensing and flexibility.

  • NVQ3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or an equivalent qualification with appropriate hands-on experience
  • A full Category B driving licence, with six points or fewer
  • Confidence using and adapting to new technology; you’ll have the tools provided, and your curiosity is welcome
  • Flexibility to work shift patterns, including evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays, because breakdowns don’t follow a clock

Pay, perks and practical details

The role comes with an average 40-hour week, and the pay package is clear from the start. Your guaranteed earnings are £41,976, made up of a base salary of £38,270 plus a location allowance of £3,706. Top performers can earn up to £60,000, and there’s a first-year sign-on bonus of £2,000 on top of guaranteed earnings.

Beyond pay, the AA offers a broad benefits package. You’ll have free breakdown cover from day one and a 50% discount for friends and family on breakdown cover. Holidays total 23 days and increase with service, and there’s a holiday buy scheme. The company contributes up to 7% to your pension, and you’ll have access to free physio and 24/7 virtual GP support, plus an Employee Assistance Programme and 24/7 remote GP service. Employee discounts add to the mix, creating a well-rounded set of practical perks to support you on and off shift.

Shift patterns are designed to fit the life you want to lead. Each year, you can choose standby hours preferences to align with your lifestyle, and you’ll work with the independence that comes from being out on the road, backed by the AA’s tools and technology to help you deliver high-quality work.

The role is onsite, with the AA backing you to build a career with a recognised UK motoring brand while you help members get moving again.

Be yourself at the AA. The company emphasizes inclusivity and support, aiming to create a workplace where everyone can thrive and bring their whole self to work. Whatever your background or perspective, they want you to feel valued and able to make a difference.

The £2,000 first-year sign-on bonus is additional to guaranteed earnings and subject to eligibility criteria and scheme terms.

Advice for applicants

Lead with your qualifications. Put the NVQ3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or the closest equivalent, and any hands-on roadside experience at the top of your resume under qualifications so the reviewer sees you meet the basics right away.

Show how you’ve used technical knowledge in real roadside fixes. Give concrete examples of when you diagnosed an issue, explained the fix to a motorist, and stayed calm and clear under pressure to restore safety and mobility.

Prepare for interview questions that mirror the role's realities. Be ready to discuss working solo in diverse locations, how you communicate with customers during a breakdown, and how you manage risk and safety while delivering practical outcomes.

Ask about scheduling and standby hours. A smart question is how standby hours are allocated and how shift patterns are decided each year, so you can understand how the work-life balance may evolve over time.
