Senior C&I Engineer
px Grouppx Group is hiring through its px PEOPLE team to bring on a Senior C&I Engineer for an onsite, full-time role in Aberdeen. The company focuses on operations management, engineering services and energy management for high hazard, highly regulated industries, with plans to grow across Europe and beyond. The Aberdeen office in Loirston houses the engineering support teams and energy services crew, and the role sits at St Fergus Gas Terminal, giving you hands-on exposure to live operations in a modern setting. This position will appeal to engineers who like close collaboration with maintenance and operations and who want ongoing on-the-job development with regular performance reviews.
In this role you’ll provide site support for the control and instrumentation function at St Fergus Gas Terminal, working side by side with maintenance and operations to troubleshoot issues and design safe, practical modifications. You’ll deal with field instrumentation, control valves, ESV, BDVs, SIS including ESD, F&G, as well as process metering and analysers, with guidance and training available to help you grow your competence.
You’ll report to the Engineering Manager and you’ll have opportunities for personalised coaching and mentoring, with twice-yearly development and performance reviews designed to keep your contributions sharp and your skills up to date.
On-site problem solving at the terminal
You’ll be the main C&I engineering interface between the engineering group and the terminal teams, providing general site support and assisting instrument technicians on operational matters as they arise. You’ll also review work scopes and guide graduates and engineers to ensure the C&I output maintains a high technical standard, while aiming to keep equipment available and well maintained in line with the company’s procedures and maintenance philosophy. You’ll need to stay aware of UK legislation and company rules, and you’ll contribute to updates to procedures and systems as needed. Deferrals to maintenance for instrumentation and metering will be assessed carefully, and you’ll help monitor maintenance performance to protect safety, reliability and availability at the terminal.
The core requirements
The must-haves include an HNC in Control or Instrumentation or an equivalent qualification, plus hands-on experience applying IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 with full functional safety lifecycle knowledge. You should be comfortable with HAZOPs, LOPA and SIL determination, including the verification and validation processes that accompany them. Desirable is an industry-recognised functional safety certificate, such as a credential from TUV Rheinland, and familiarity with the documentation and certification needed to mobilise to the UKCS offshore sector (MIST, BOISET, etc.) is preferred.
What you’ll get in return
The role includes a benefits package that features 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays, a contribution toward eye tests and glasses, access to an online company discount site with cinema and gym perks, Long Service Awards, the ELITE Awards employee recognition scheme, an Employee Assistance Programme, a flexible benefits package and onsite parking. The position is onsite in Aberdeen and pays as a permanent, full-time role. px Group is an equal opportunity employer.
We are committed to equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and marriage and civil partnerships.
Please note this role may close early or be extended depending on the volume of applications.
Advice for applicants
Lead with your HNC in Control or Instrumentation and clearly show any IEC 61508 or IEC 61511 work you’ve done, including the full safety lifecycle steps you’ve walked through. Make your qualifications and your safety-focused experience the first things recruiters see on your resume.
Give concrete examples of how you’ve handled HAZOPs, LOPA and SIL work, and mention any supervision or mentoring you’ve provided to graduates or junior engineers. Tie these experiences to improving maintenance and reliability at a live site.
Prepare to talk through a recent instrumentation issue at a live terminal, the steps you took to troubleshoot, and the modification you implemented. Emphasise your collaboration with maintenance and operations and the outcome in terms of safety and uptime.
Think of a smart question to ask that shows you’re thinking about the role’s balance between ongoing site support and modification design, for example: how the team prioritises C&I tasks when multiple projects demand attention, or how maintenance philosophy evolves to address instrumentation reliability at St Fergus.
