About the role

This is a senior, hands on engineering role within Fingermark’s Computer Vision team.

The primary focus of the role is contributing directly to the design, build and operation of Fingermark’s computer vision systems, working across hybrid environments including cloud and edge devices. Strong platform engineering capability and experience operating production systems are central to the work.

Team leadership capability and interest are welcomed but not essential. Depending on experience and interest, the role may include mentoring other engineers, contributing to technical direction, and supporting delivery practices within the team.

The role can be based in Hawke’s Bay or remote within New Zealand. Work hours align with NZ business hours.

About you

You’re a senior computer vision engineer with strong software engineering fundamentals and experience working in production environments. You’re comfortable operating across the full machine learning lifecycle and working with systems deployed across cloud and edge devices.

You enjoy solving complex technical problems and contributing directly to systems that run in the real world. Strong engineering practices matter to you, and you value clear, pragmatic approaches to building and maintaining reliable software.

If you have experience leading or mentoring other engineers or you’re interested in stepping further into a leadership role over time, there is scope to do so.

You’ll bring

  • A strong software engineering background, with proficiency in Python and experience using libraries such as OpenCV, PyTorch or TensorFlow, NumPy or scikit-image
  • Experience applying computer vision techniques and deep learning methods, including object detection and segmentation
  • Experience working across cloud and edge environments, including deployment to edge and extreme-edge devices
  • Solid experience deploying and operating microservices using Docker, Kubernetes and Helm
  • Experience with model deployment and optimisation using tools such as NVIDIA Triton, ONNX, TensorRT or NVIDIA DeepStream
  • An understanding of the end-to-end ML lifecycle, including data collection, labelling, augmentation, training, validation and continuous evaluation
  • Experience designing scalable data pipelines and APIs for video, image or sensor data
  • Familiarity with AWS services such as S3, EC2, IoT Core and DynamoDB
  • Experience with monitoring and logging in production environments (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, ELK or similar)
  • An understanding of CI/CD workflows and experience working with distributed systems

Team leadership experience (desirable, not essential)

  • Experience mentoring engineers and supporting their technical development
  • Confidence contributing to code quality through reviews and shared standards
  • Experience supporting agile delivery practices such as sprint planning and backlog refinement
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with product managers, engineers and operations teams
  • Clear communication when discussing technical work with non-technical stakeholders
