Purpose
The Senior Electrical Heat Trace Designer provides senior-level technical leadership and hands-on design expertise for electrical heat tracing systems across industrial projects. This role is accountable for the quality, consistency, and timely delivery of EHT design packages in support of Worley and its customers, while acting as a subject matter expert (SME) for heat tracing within the electrical discipline.
Responsibilities
Lead and deliver high-quality Electrical Heat Trace (EHT) design services that meet Worley, client, and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, on time and within budget.
Key accountabilities include:
Acting as the Electrical Heat Trace (EHT) subject matter expert for projects, providing technical leadership and guidance on complex heat tracing design scopes.
Leading the development, coordination, and quality assurance of EHT design deliverables across the full project lifecycle (concept, FEED, detailed design, construction support).
Preparing and reviewing EHT design deliverables, including heat tracing philosophies, system architectures, layouts, circuit schedules, and construction packages.
Providing technical direction and design oversight to electrical designers and drafting teams assigned to EHT scopes, including task assignment, workload planning, and design reviews.
Participating in project planning, progress reporting, and compliance with required checking and quality assurance procedures.
Ensuring EHT scope is clearly defined and that changes are managed in accordance with project change management processes.
Supporting procurement, construction, and commissioning activities related to heat tracing systems, including:
Preparation and review of EHT equipment and materials requisitions
Technical bid evaluations for heat trace systems and control panels
Review of vendor documentation and purchase orders
Resolution of site and vendor technical queries
Coordinating closely with process, piping, mechanical, insulation, and instrumentation disciplines to ensure EHT designs are fully integrated with process and piping requirements.
Providing technical input into constructability, maintainability, and operability reviews for heat tracing systems.
Proactively identifying and resolving discrepancies between Worley and client EHT standards, specifications, and design philosophies.
Supporting and mentoring junior designers and engineers on EHT design methodologies, standards, and best practices.
Communicating effectively with project stakeholders, including clients, vendors, and construction partners.
Identifying technical risks and issues related to EHT system performance, constructability, and operability, and developing practical solutions.
Technical & Industry Experience
Extensive experience delivering Electrical Heat Trace (EHT) design on industrial projects (e.g., energy, mining, chemicals, LNG, pipelines, or infrastructure).
Recognized subject matter expertise in the design of electric heat tracing systems, including self-regulating, constant wattage, and mineral insulated (MI) heat trace technologies.
Strong working knowledge of EHT design tools, calculation methods, and vendor software (e.g., Thermon, nVent/Raychem, BriskHeat, or equivalent).
Solid understanding of heat tracing system engineering, including circuit design, power distribution, control and monitoring architectures, and cold climate design considerations.
Strong working knowledge of electrical design systems, workflows, and document management tools (e.g., SAP, KMS, or similar project systems).
Solid understanding of project scope development, workshare execution, and delegation of design activities across internal and external teams.
Familiarity with hazardous area electrical design and applicable codes and standards (e.g., CSA, IECEx, ATEX, NEC/CEC).
Strong working knowledge of EHT and Electrical design deliverables, including:
Heat tracing design criteria and philosophies
Heat loss calculations and circuit sizing
Heat trace routing layouts and isometrics
Circuit schedules and panel schedules
Power distribution and load lists for EHT systems
Electrical single-line diagrams related to EHT power supplies
Cable schedules, routing, tray, and conduit layouts for EHT power and control
