Canva is looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer in Performance Monitoring to design lightweight SDKs, dashboards, and CI checks that surface LCP, INP and CLS, embed OpenTelemetry, and scale data pipelines ingesting billions of events daily. You will partner with platform and infrastructure teams to ship reusable libraries and tools, launch no-merge-if-slower checks, and lead end-to-end investigations with Chrome DevTools and Lighthouse to eliminate bottlenecks. The ideal candidate has JavaScript frontend expertise with React and TypeScript, is comfortable with Node and modern CI/CD, and brings a data-driven mindset with strong storytelling for diverse stakeholders. Tip: highlight measurable performance wins, cross-team influence, and any observability or RUM work, and note willingness to work onsite in Sydney.

Job Description

  • Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne. But you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

  • You'll design and maintain lightweight SDKs, dashboards, and CI/PR checks that surface key performance metrics (LCP, INP, CLS).
  • You'll embed OpenTelemetry standards and extend data pipelines that ingest billions of real-user events every day.
  • You'll partner with platform and infrastructure teams to ensure low-overhead metric collection, shipping reusable libraries, CLIs, and tools.
  • You'll launch "no-merge-if-slower" checks that statistically flag or block regressions, with developer-friendly diff reports.
  • You'll run end-to-end investigations to profile, reproduce, and eliminate systemic bottlenecks using Chrome DevTools, Lighthouse, and similar tools.
  • You'll mine real-user and synthetic data to surface high-ROI opportunities for fixes and improvements in the monitoring tools.

You're probably a match if

  • JavaScript frontend expertise – proven experience designing, building, and shipping rich JS/TypeScript + React interfaces.
  • Full-stack fluency – comfortable diving into Node-based services and tools, data pipelines, and modern CI/CD workflows
  • Data-driven mindset – balance intuition with evidence, design statistically sound experiments, and let numbers guide your decisions.
  • Clear communicator – transform a flame-graph or p95 spike into an engaging narrative for engineers, PMs, execs, and other stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder influence – adept at working across multiple org levels, aligning priorities, and driving action in product, platform, and leadership circles.

Nice to haves:

  • Deep web-performance knowledge – expert understanding of rendering pipelines, main-thread bottlenecks, network protocols, and the latest performance APIs.
  • Large-scale observability & RUM experience – hands-on with Real User Monitoring, OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Looker, Mode, or similar systems processing millions of events per minute.
  • Strong TypeScript chops – proficiency crafting robust, typed code across both client and server.
