Westpac is hiring a Senior Quality Engineer for a fixed‑term role in Wellington, onsite, until 31 March 2026, to design and drive automation, functional and performance testing across the WNZL landscape and to mentor peers. The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of testing across the testing pyramid, solid Java and API automation (Spring Boot, messaging queues), integration testing, and experience in CI/CD (CloudBees, Docker, OpenShift) plus performance testing with Gatling, Dynatrace, Splunk. Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

You will actively oversee and participate in delivery and best practice by designing, developing, maintaining and executing automation, functional and performance test solutions across the WNZL landscape using the most appropriate tool set, best practice techniques and agile quality engineering practices. You will provide thought leadership and peer reviews across the WNZL community regarding the design and implementation of testing strategies and solutions, including upskilling and training peers across disciplines.

This position is a fixed-term role that will run until 31st March 2026.

Ko tō mahi | What you will do

  • Actively participate in overall delivery aligned with broader technology and business strategies

  • Review requirements, user stories and technical documentation, and participate in and drive workshops to ensure understanding and design of test scenarios

  • Educate the wider Business Area on quality and the benefits of different types of testing, ensuring best practice

  • Mentor, coach and support peers and less experienced members of the Business Area

  • Maintain oversight of and actively support test delivery to ensure value is delivered to our customers

  • Proactively provide demonstrations and Show and Tells

  • Perform related duties as assigned within the scope of the role and as required by senior leadership

  • Provide best practice oversight and input into the selection, evaluation and implementation of test tools and utilities

  • Work with other Engineers to promote the capture and reuse of unit test level scripts, test stubs, drivers and other development test objects

  • Provide ongoing thought leadership and technical guidance on the practical application and use of technical tools

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

  • 5+ years experience in testing using commercial and/or open source test tools across the testing pyramid

  • Experience with Java

  • Experience in API automation testing using Java, Spring Boot and Messaging Queues

  • Experience with Integration Testing

  • Experience delivering major pieces of work in a complex agile or DevOps delivery environment

  • Practical experience in the design, implementation and execution of test solutions and frameworks

  • Experience in CI/CD (CloudBees, Docker, OpenShift)

  • Experience participating in a quality engineering community

  • Experience with performance testing using Gatling, Dynatrace, Splunk and Oracle DB

  • Experience with file based testing, IBM Messaging Queue, message encoding and decoding

  • Knowledge of the payments domain and host systems is beneficial

  • Experience with IBM Rational Integration Tester is helpful

  • Experience leading cross functional squads while collaborating closely with developers to embed shift left quality practices
