DoorDash is hiring a Shop Operations Lead for its DoorDash Labs in San Francisco, a full-time onsite role five days a week, serving as the operational anchor of the Prototype and Integration Engineering workspace. You will manage workspace and shop infrastructure, lead EH&S, PPE, MSDS, ESD and OSHA compliance, supervise tool upkeep and inventory, and assemble and troubleshoot electromechanical systems as needed. The right candidate has 5+ years in mechanical, electrical or robotics industries, strong machinist skills, CAD literacy, and a proven ability to collaborate with engineers while ensuring safety and uptime. To apply, tailor your resume to show hands-on builds, inventory control, safety leadership, and highlight on-site availability and ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

About the Team

DoorDash Labs is an independent team within DoorDash. We are working on building autonomous delivery robots from the ground up and other automation solutions as part of DoorDash's core delivery platform. If you have a passion for applying AI and robotics solutions in a service used by millions of people, then we want to talk to you!

Please Note: This role is based in San Francisco, CA, and requires being in-person 5 days a week.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Shop Operations Lead to join our team. In this versatile role, you will be the backbone of the Prototype and Integration Engineering workspace, ensuring a safe, functional, and efficient environment for our machinists, builders, and makers. You will own workspace management, compliance, and shop equipment upkeep, working closely with facilities to ensure maximum uptime.

Beyond operational leadership, this is a hands-on role where you will leverage your machinist skill sets to support physical builds during peak cycles. You will act as a Prototype and Integration Technician when needed—troubleshooting complex electromechanical systems, assembling robotic vehicles, and helping the engineering team maintain a world-class development capability.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will…

  • Maintain and manage the workspace, office infrastructure, and shipping/receiving to ensure a high-functioning environment.
  • Lead EH&S efforts, including managing MSDS, PPE, ESD protocols, and ensuring strict compliance with OSHA safety standards.
  • Own shop equipment upkeep and tool maintenance, collaborating with facilities to assist in large-scale infrastructure needs and preventative maintenance.
  • Manage shop-specific consumables and prototype materials inventory, ensuring the team has the resources required for rapid iteration.
  • Assemble, repair, and troubleshoot complex electromechanical systems, including test platforms and robotic vehicles, when supporting the team as a technician.
  • Own the end-to-end build and delivery of test fixtures and prototypes, following precisely developed engineering instructions.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering to minimize downtime, optimize shop performance, and integrate electronics and sensors.
  • Document detailed assembly and operational procedures for future reference, repeatability, and safety training.

We’re excited about you because you have…

  • 5+ years of hands-on technical experience in mechanical, electrical, automotive, or robotics industries.
  • Strong machinist skill sets with a demonstrated ability to assemble prototypes and follow engineering instructions (drawings, CAD) precisely.
  • Deep knowledge of EH&S and OSHA standards, including safety protocols for shop power tools, heavy machinery, and hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in inventory management, procurement of key components, and maintaining supplier relationships.
  • Proficiency with shop tools, including 3D printers, diagnostic instruments, and manual machining equipment (drills, saws, grinders).
  • Strong understanding of schematics and datasheets, with the ability to interpret them accurately for complex builds.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with a high level of agency in managing a shared lab environment.
  • Willingness to work on-site and in a hands-on lab/warehouse environment, including the ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

Preferred experience includes…

  • Skills in manual machining, welding, composites, or other advanced fabrication techniques.
  • Knowledge of CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Onshape) for 3D model navigation and design edits.
  • Background in automotive repair or complex vehicle system maintenance.
  • Familiarity with Linux or Python for basic robotic system testing and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with (THT/SMD) PCB soldering and custom wiring harness design.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license
