Te Tūranga | About the role

Build technology that makes a real difference.

We currently have two Software Engineer opportunities available: one permanent role and one fixed-term role covering parental leave.

At Tauranga City Council, technology plays a critical role in delivering services to one of New Zealand's fastest-growing cities. We're looking for a Software Engineer who wants more than just another development role—someone who enjoys solving complex problems, building great software, and seeing their work create meaningful outcomes for both the organisation and the community.

You'll join a collaborative Digital Services team responsible for developing and supporting modern applications, integrations and digital solutions that help our people work smarter and deliver better services. From designing new functionality to improving existing platforms, you'll be involved throughout the software development lifecycle and have the opportunity to influence how solutions are built, delivered and continuously improved.

Whether you're developing integrations, enhancing cloud-based solutions, improving customer experiences or contributing to technical direction, you'll be part of a team that values innovation, quality and practical outcomes.

  • Develop secure, scalable and modern digital solutions that support Council services and operations.
  • Work across enterprise applications, integrations, cloud technologies and emerging digital platforms.
  • Contribute to a collaborative engineering culture focused on continuous improvement and technical excellence.

Ngā Pukenga | What you'll need to succeed

You'll be a curious and capable developer who enjoys learning new technologies and working collaboratively to solve problems. You understand that great software is about more than writing code—it's about delivering solutions that meet user needs and create value.

To succeed in this role, you'll bring:

  • Experience developing and supporting software applications in a modern development environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate business needs into effective technical solutions.
  • Experience working with integrations, APIs, cloud platforms or enterprise systems.
  • A commitment to quality, continuous improvement and engineering best practice.
  • The ability to build positive relationships and work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Most importantly, you'll be someone who takes ownership, enjoys working as part of a team and is motivated by creating solutions that make life easier for customers and colleagues alike.
