Te Tūranga | About the role

Tauranga is one of New Zealand’s fastest‑growing cities, and we’re looking for an experienced and people‑focused Team Leader to lead our Building Consent Processing team.

In this role, you’ll provide strong leadership and technical guidance to ensure building consents are processed accurately, fairly, and on time. You’ll support your team to do great work in a busy regulatory environment, while building strong working relationships with customers, industry, and internal stakeholders.

This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll balance technical expertise with coaching, performance management, and continuous improvement.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading the Building Consent Processing team to deliver accurate, timely, and consistent consent decisions
  • Setting clear expectations and managing performance against statutory timeframes and service standards
  • Providing technical leadership and acting as the escalation point for complex building consent matters
  • Coaching, developing, and supporting team members to build capability and confidence
  • Building effective working relationships across Building Services, with customers and industry professionals
  • Driving continuous improvement of processes, systems, and ways of working
  • Actively engaging with the BCA Quality Assurance System to support accreditation and compliance

 

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

You’ll bring strong leadership experience in a technical or regulatory environment, along with a calm and confident approach in high‑pressure situations. You’ll also have:

  • A qualification that meets Regulation 18 requirements (NZQA Level 6 or above) in building, surveying, engineering, or construction
  • Significant experience (10+ years) leading a high‑performing technical team
  • Strong knowledge of the Building Act 2004, Building Code, and associated regulations
  • The ability to interpret legislation and apply it in practical, proportionate ways
  • Excellent communication skills and a customer‑focused mindset
  • A collaborative leadership style that supports learning, accountability, and continuous improvement
