Job Description
The Label Review Officer is responsible for ensuring that food product labels comply with all applicable national and international regulatory requirements. The role involves reviewing artwork, verifying claims, assessing regulatory compliance, and supporting clients with technical guidance throughout the label development and approval process. The officer works closely with SGS food safety, regulatory, and inspection teams to deliver high‑quality, accurate, and timely compliance reviews.
Key Responsibilities
1. Label Compliance Review
- Conduct comprehensive reviews of food product labels to verify compliance with national and international regulatory standards, including allergen declarations, nutritional labeling, ingredient listing, and claims.
- Assess label elements such as artwork formatting, layout, bilingual requirements, net content statements, identity statements, country‑of‑origin statements, and dietary‑supplement‑specific requirements.
- Evaluate specialized claims such as health claims, nutrient content claims, GMO declarations, organic labeling, and method‑of‑production claims.
2. Food Label Verification & Translation
- Ensure labels are correctly translated and aligned with target‑market language requirements and regulatory interpretations.
3. Technical Support & Client Interaction
- Provide technical advice to clients on food label regulatory requirements and compliance expectations.
- Maintain clear communication with clients on progress, review findings, corrective actions, and regulatory updates.
4. Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare accurate review reports in line with SGS standards, ensuring clarity, completeness, and regulatory accuracy.
- Manage label review documentation, compliance records, and regulatory references in SGS databases.
5. Regulatory Monitoring
- Utilize SGS DIGICOMPLY and other regulatory intelligence tools to monitor evolving food labeling regulations and ensure alignment with current standards.
6. Collaboration & Training
- Collaborate with SGS food inspectors, testing laboratories, and regulatory specialists for integrated compliance assessments.
- Support training of internal teams on food label compliance best practices and regulatory changes.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Food Technology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (typical requirement in SGS food-related roles).
Experience
- 2–5 years experience in food labeling, regulatory affairs, product compliance, or food safety quality assurance.
- Experience with food manufacturing, food inspection, or food regulatory evaluation is advantageous.
Technical Competencies
- Strong understanding of national & international food label regulations (Codex, FDA, EU, GCC, etc.).
- Knowledge of labeling categories such as allergens, nutrition facts panels, ingredient statements, and regulatory claims.
- Ability to interpret regulatory texts and apply them accurately to product labels.
- Familiarity with packaging technology and labeling artwork evaluations.
Skills
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written communication skills for preparing compliance reports.
- Ability to manage multiple label review projects and meet deadlines.
- Competence in using compliance platforms such as SGS DIGICOMPLY.
- Fluency in Arabic language is mandatory.
