Optics11 is seeking a hands-on Technical Design Engineer / Draughtsman to convert customer projects into detailed, manufacturable engineering packages for advanced fibre optic sensing solutions used in critical infrastructure. You’ll collaborate with project managers, R&D, supply chain, production and suppliers to translate proposals into 3D models, 2D drawings, assemblies, BOMs and supplier documentation, defining mounting, sealing, cable and fibre routing, splice plans and installation sequences to ensure producibility and timely delivery. Requirements include 7–12 years in mechanical or related fields with strong CAD, detailed drawings and BOMs, plus experience in manufacturing and harsh-environment or marine contexts; security screening (AIVD) may apply. To apply, tailor your resume to highlight junction boxes, fibre routing, splices, and enclosure design, provide a concise portfolio, and confirm willingness to work onsite in Amsterdam.

We are looking for a Technical design engineer / Technical draughtsman to convert customer projects into detailed, manufacturable engineering packages.

We develop cutting-edge fiber optic sensing solutions that help protect critical infrastructure and enable smarter monitoring in industries like energy and underwater security.

You will work closely with Project managers, R&D, Supply Chain, Production, Quality, and suppliers. Your role is to define the practical design details needed to build and deliver customer projects, including mechanical drawings, junction box layouts, fibre optic routing, connector details, splice plans, BOMs, and supplier documentation.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone with a strong mechanical background who enjoys turning conceptual designs into real, buildable designs. Experience with underwater, offshore, marine, subsea, fibre optic, or harsh-environment systems is a strong advantage.

Key Responsibilities:

Convert projects from conceptual or basic design into detailed design:

  • Translate our proposals to customers into detailed technical designs. Customize-to-order our product portfolio to fulfill our customers needs.

  • Create manufacturable 3D models, 2D drawings, assemblies, and technical specifications.

  • Define practical design details such as mounting, interfaces, sealing, cable entry, fibre routing, connector placement, and assembly sequence.

  • Ensure the design can be built, inspected, tested, and delivered.

Detailed design of hardware:

Design and detail hardware such as:

  • Fibre optic connection layouts

  • Cable and fibre routing

  • Splice plans and splice tray layouts

  • Junction boxes and connector interfaces

  • Sensor mounting concepts

  • Brackets, housings, covers, plates, fixtures, and mechanical interfaces

  • Assembly and installation details

Create production-ready documentation:

  • 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings

  • Assembly drawings

  • Bill of Materials

  • Supplier drawings

  • Technical specifications

  • Fibre connection details and splice diagrams

  • Inspection and test requirements

 Support Operations and suppliers:

  • Support procurement with technical drawings and specifications for RFQs.

  • Clarify technical details with suppliers.

  • Support production during assembly and testing.

  • Review supplier feedback and improve designs where needed.

  • Help standardise designs to reduce cost, risk, and lead time.

Why Join Us:

  • Join one of Europe’s most promising deep-tech scale-ups

  • Competitive salary and benefits package

  • Enjoy regular team activities and company events

  • Fresh team lunches provided 3 times/ week

Requirements

Required Background:

  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Offshore Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Design, or similar with 7-12 years of experience

  • Strong mechanical design and CAD experience.

  • Experience creating detailed drawings and BOMs.

  • Good understanding of manufacturing, assembly, tolerances, materials, and technical documentation.

  • Ability to work with project teams, production, suppliers, and quality.

 Preferred Experience

  • Experience with underwater, subsea, offshore, marine, dredging, or harsh-environment equipment.

  • Experience with junction boxes, enclosures, cable routing, connectors, sealing, strain relief, or fibre optic systems.

  • Experience with fibre optic assemblies, splicing, routing, sensors, or instrumentation is a strong plus.

Security & Compliance:

You'll be working with clients in the defense and security sectors, obtaining a Certificate of No Objection issued by the AIVD (Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service) is mandatory. This means you will need to undergo a security screening. For more information, please refer to details on security screening.
