JOB SUMMARY:The Tertiary Mental Health Older Adult Service is committed to creating and sustaining a culture of person centred care which emphasizes the unique perspective of each individual in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for that person to foster a community of compassion, empowerment and hope for these individuals.Within the context of a person and family-centred model and in accordance with established vision and values of the organization, works as a member of an interdisciplinary tertiary mental health team to provide care to the older adult population who have acute deterioration or exacerbation of severe psychiatric symptoms with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) as well as physical care needs. Reporting to the Program Coordinator and under the direction of the Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist and Social Worker, this position works with the interdisciplinary tertiary mental health team to carry out individual or group leisure activities and established nursing/personal care programs. Duties include selecting and carrying out activities, assisting the client with practising daily living skills, accompanying clients on group outings, observing and reporting client progress, participating in unit discussions and in-services, and performing nursing procedures such as administering suppositories and enemas and taking and recording temperature, pulse and respiration. Provides personal care to clients such as bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting and feeding. QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training and Experience Grade 12, graduation from a recognized Resident Care Attendant Program plus 2 years’ recent experience working with older adults with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Successful candidates will be required to successfully complete a Food Safe certification course during their orientation/qualifying period in order to be deemed to have successfully passed their qualifying period. Skills and Abilities:• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.• Ability to deal with others effectively.• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.• Ability to organize the work• Ability to operate related equipment.The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
