Underground Pump Fitter
OceanaGoldOceanaGold is a global producer of gold and copper with more than 35 years of exploration, development and operating experience. The company runs four operating mines, Haile in the United States, Macraes and Waihi in New Zealand, and Didipio in the Philippines, and employs about 5,400 people and contractors worldwide. Guided by its values of care, respect, integrity, performance and teamwork, the company aims to mine safely and responsibly while delivering value to the regions it serves. The Waihi operation is an underground gold mine in New Zealand, and a recent consent for the Waihi North Project has extended mine life, backing a long-term presence with around 400 staff and contractors. This is a full-time, onsite role that will suit someone who enjoys practical, hands-on maintenance work in a safety-focused underground setting.
The Underground Pump Fitter position sits with the Underground Mobile Maintenance team at Waihi. It’s a residential role in Waihi, designed for a hands-on mechanic who can keep the underground pumping and dewatering systems performing to high standards. If you’re drawn to a collaborative, safety-conscious mine culture and like fixing pumps, rebuilding components, and keeping the site’s pumping capability reliable, this could be a fit.
OceanaGold is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds.
A day in the underground pump station
You’ll work as part of the maintenance crew to deliver a responsive function that keeps the site’s pumping and dewatering systems running safely and efficiently. Your days typically blend planned maintenance with urgent repairs, including pump rebuilds and repairs, while you also lend a hand with light engineering and fabrication tasks on mobile plant and equipment onsite. Collaboration with other site teams is key, ensuring production targets are met without compromising safety or quality, and you’ll look for ways to improve safety, productivity and cost effectiveness.
In this role you’ll be closely aligned with the underground mining operation, so your work will support production targets while maintaining the highest safety standards and a practical approach to problem solving.

Advice for applicants
Put your essential qualifications up front on your resume. Lead with your First Aid Certificate, your full New Zealand driver’s licence (manual capability) and your mechanical trade qualification to show you meet the must-haves at a glance.
Back up those must-haves with concrete work examples. Describe times you performed scheduled and breakdown maintenance on pumping and dewatering systems, completed pump rebuilds, and did light engineering or fabrication on mobile plant tied to underground operations.
Be ready to talk about safety and collaboration. Share how you’ve worked with cross-functional teams to meet production targets without compromising safety, and give a sense of how you approach problem solving in a noisy, hands-on environment.
Think about the roster and planning. If you’ve operated on an eight-on, six-off schedule before, or if you’ve supported shift handovers in a maintenance context, be prepared to discuss how you would structure your day to keep pumps running and underground operations steady.
