WM New Zealand is recruiting in Auckland for a Wheel Loader Operator to join an onsite team focused on waste management, processing, and community support. This is a full-time, on-site role that suits someone who enjoys practical, hands-on work and wants to be part of a safety-first culture that looks after people and the whenua. The company describes itself as more than waste management, valuing problem solvers, practical doers, and people who back each other up.

The role centers on running processing equipment safely and efficiently to hit targets, while following directions from a shift supervisor or factory manager. It’s a hands-on position that rewards diligence and the ability to spot and fix issues before they become problems. You’ll also need to lead by example, prioritise health and safety, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

A shift behind the wheel

On a typical day you’ll operate the loader and associated processing gear, monitor machine performance and settings to keep output aligned with plan, and perform routine servicing and maintenance to keep equipment in good shape. You’ll verify materials before processing to ensure they’re clean, free of contaminants, and the correct type, and you’ll manage quality checks and paperwork so any out-of-spec results are escalated promptly. The role also involves making sure finished goods are clearly labelled with accurate descriptions, helping with housekeeping tasks like sweeping and cleaning, and assisting other processes on site as needed by the supervisor. A strong emphasis is placed on working safely, supporting risk management practices, and helping keep the screening equipment free of jams and well maintained.

What the role asks for and what helps you stand out

  • Clear, reliable communication, both spoken and written
  • A forklift OSH certificate, an F endorsement, or solid forklift experience (certificate or formal training is highly desirable)
  • First Aid knowledge or certification paired with a solid understanding of health and safety practices
  • Physical fitness to lift 20–30 kilograms across shifts
  • Willingness to adapt to changing days and hours
  • Reliability and punctuality, plus your own means of transport
  • Experience in plastics or material compounding is a bonus and would be advantageous

Pay and practical details

WM New Zealand offers a competitive salary package, room for career progression, and benefits such as access to discounted health insurance and a range of family-friendly perks. The role is onsite in Auckland and full-time, with the usual expectations of safe, efficient operation and participation in the company’s safety-first culture. You must be in New Zealand and hold a current work visa/residency or NZ citizenship.

Tips to help you shine in this role

Lead with your forklift OSH certificate and any endorsements or hands-on forklift experience, and be ready to explain when and where you’ve used those qualifications on the job.

Show concrete evidence of safety training and health-and-safety awareness, and mention any First Aid certification you hold to underscore your readiness for a safety-focused environment.

In interviews, be prepared to discuss how you ensure production processes stay on plan and how you address non-conformances when they arise, with real examples if you can.

Think of a thoughtful question to ask about the site’s safety culture, HSEQ processes, and how the team handles risk management day to day.
