Lids Sports Group is hiring a part-time Assistant Store Manager to join its Appleton, Wisconsin team onsite. As the largest licensed sports retailer in North America, Lids runs more than 1,300 stores and blends sports, fashion and fan culture under one roof. The company is headquartered in Indianapolis and is known for officially licensed headwear and apparel, in-store embroidery, and collaborations with brands like Marvel and Disney. This role sits under the Store Manager and is a strong fit for someone who loves sports, shoes, and helping fans find the gear they want.

If you’re drawn to leading a small team, coaching colleagues, and ensuring a smooth, welcoming shopping experience, you’ll likely feel at home here. You’ll work onsite in Appleton and report to the Store Manager, with responsibilities that touch on every aspect of store performance, from sales to customer service to brand standards.

In this position, you’ll step in as manager on duty when the Store Manager isn’t available, guide staffing and training, and help uphold policy compliance across the store. It’s a hands-on role for someone who enjoys problem-solving on the floor and building a fun, inclusive environment for colleagues and customers alike.

Steering the floor from the front lines

On a typical shift you’ll lead the team through scheduling decisions, training initiatives, and performance follow-ups in the absence of the Store Manager, while applying the company’s discipline framework when needed. You’ll help the staff understand how their work supports store goals and the broader success of Lids, and you’ll model the brand standards in dress, service and conduct.

Customer experience sits at the heart of this role. You’ll implement the selling strategy to hit KPIs and sales targets, promptly address customer feedback or escalations, and educate shoppers about membership programs and live in-store offers. You’ll also ensure merchandising looks current and professional, with clear signage and clean, organized premises.

Operational duties will keep you close to the heartbeat of the store: maintaining cash accuracy through opening and closing procedures, safeguarding inventory and property, supporting inventory audits, and preparing the store for audits or special promotions. Opening and closing the store as needed is part of the routine too.

What it takes to lead the store

Must-have qualifications include a proven ability to drive sales while protecting assets, strong people skills with clear, professional communication, and the capacity to work independently without direct supervision.

  • A history of achieving sales targets while keeping shrink under control.
  • Clear, professional communication paired with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously without direct oversight.

Nice-to-haves are not specified in the posting.

What you’ll gain and what it costs

The role is onsite in Appleton, Wisconsin and part-time. Lids offers a comprehensive package including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a retirement plan, and 100% employer-paid benefits such as short-term and long-term disability, life and AD&D insurance, plus an Employee Assistance Program. You’ll receive Paid Time Off, a generous employee discount, access to exclusive perks, and ongoing career development, including discounted secondary education courses. The culture is described as collaborative and team-oriented, with Early Wage Access options and uncapped monthly bonus potential. Work authorization is required for the country of employment, and sponsorship is not available for this role.

Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, climbing a ladder and working with hands overhead, standing and walking frequently during shifts, and frequent verbal communication with customers and team members. You’ll need to read store information, operate a computer and POS system, and reasonable accommodations can be provided if needed.

Tips to stand out in your application

Lead with leadership on your resume. Open with a summary that highlights your experience running shifts, scheduling, training, and coaching teams, especially any time you acted as Manager on Duty and kept operations smooth during busy periods.

Back up your must-haves with concrete results. When you describe your experience, include numbers that show how you drove sales while reducing losses, and mention your cash-handling, opening/closing procedures, and involvement in inventory controls.

Be ready to discuss real customer scenarios. Have a story about resolving a difficult customer interaction on the spot, how you turned a negative experience into a positive one, and how you communicate options like memberships or promos to close the sale.

Ask a precise question during the interview. For example, inquire about which KPIs matter most in the Appleton store this quarter, how the team is supported through Lids’ training programs, and what pathways exist for advancing from this role within the company.
