ASD-W is running an ongoing competition for Casual Student Attendants (CUPE 2745) with Anglophone West School District to support learners with exceptional needs in Fredericton/Oromocto; the role focuses on attending to the physical needs of learners, using adaptive equipment, and providing supervision and transportation support in school and community settings, but it is not an Educational Assistant position and does not include teaching or routine data collection. Key requirements include the ability to read and write, empathy for exceptional learners, and willingness to be trained on augmentative communication devices and to deploy on short notice within ASD-W boundaries; if you live outside the boundaries, describe how you will meet proximity expectations. ASD-W Student Attendant Roles and Responsibilities

The work of a Student Attendant (SA) is of limited complexity. The SA primarily attends to the physical needs of the learner.

The role of an SA includes:

  • Attending to the physical needs of exceptional learners.
  • Use a variety of adaptive equipment to support the learner. 
  • Willingness to be trained and understand augmentative communication devices as needed.  
  • Assisting learners with transportation.
  • Physically assisting learners on community visits.
  • Physically assisting learners at work locations.
  • Supporting learners entering and leaving the building.
  • Supporting learners moving around the school.
  • Assistance with feeding.
  • Assistance with hygiene.
  • Assistance with clothing and toileting.
  • Care of catheterized learners.
  • Assistance with general supervision of learners.
  • General support of learners. 
  • The ability to read and write
  • The ability to understand and relate to exceptional learners.
  • A willingness to be trained to support learners with exceptional needs.

 

The role of the SA does not include:

  • Assisting teachers in the performance of their duties.
  • Assisting in preparation of learning aids and the assembly of materials as directed by the teacher.
  • Assisting with maintaining records.
  • Generally assisting teachers with functions that fulfill their instructional, social, or behavioural goals. 
  • Provide support to learner(s) in achieving their goals.  
  • Collect data and observations requested by the educator(s). 
  • Provide academic supports or tutoring to learners. 
  • Collaborate with educator(s) to schedule opportunities to discuss learner(s) goals. 
  • Implementing academic or behavioural programming as stated in the learner’s PLP.
  • An SA cannot perform the regular duties of an Educational Assistant.

Whereas the nature of a Student Attendant requires timely deployment to work on short-notice, it is expected that those named to our supply list will live within ASD-W boundaries and a reasonable proximity to selected schools.

If applying from an address outside of ASD-W, please describe in your application how you would meet these expectations.

If you live within the Fredericton City Limits:

The Fredericton City Police do their Criminal Record Checks and Vulnerable Sector Checks online.  Please click on the following link Criminal Record Checks | City of Fredericton and request a Vulnerable Sector Check and it will include your Criminal Record Check.

If you are contacted by the Fredericton City Police to come in and you require a letter from District office, you will need to pick up an original signed letter from the Receptionist at the Office of the Superintendent/Fredericton Education Centre located at 1135 Prospect St, Fredericton, NB. 

If you live outside the Fredericton City Limits:

You will need to pick up an original signed letter from the Receptionist at the Office of the Superintendent or from one of the Education Centres that you are required to take with you to the R.C.M.P.  Please request a Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Record Check. You can pick up a copy of the letter from one of the Anglophone West School District offices:
