Downer is seeking an Assistant Accountant in Auckland to join the Government & Integrated Facilities Management team and deliver accurate financial reporting for essential contracts. Reporting to the Finance Team Manager NZ, you’ll help with month-end processes, including journals, accruals and reconciliations, and prepare monthly and ad hoc reports with practical insights. You’ll support cost analysis and cost-out initiatives, and manage invoicing, debtors and accounts payable while collaborating with finance, contract and operations to strengthen governance. The ideal candidate has an accounting degree, fast-paced reporting experience, strong Excel and systems skills (SAP, WMS or Coupa a plus), and a proactive, collaborative mindset. We currently have an opportunity for an Assistant Accountant in Auckland NZ to join our Government & Integrated Facilities Management team and play a key role in delivering accurate financial reporting and trusted support across essential contracts. Reporting to the Finance Team Manager NZ, you’ll help deliver high‑quality outcomes that support our essential services.

 

What You’ll Do 

This role offers a broad scope, with key responsibilities including:

  • Supporting month‑end financial processes, including journals, accruals, reconciliations, invoicing and profit recognition, with a strong focus on accuracy and timeliness. 

  • Preparing monthly and ad‑hoc financial reports, providing meaningful insights to support operational and commercial decision‑making.

  • Assisting with overhead and cost analysis, and contributing to cost‑out initiatives and continuous improvement opportunities. 

  • Managing invoicing, debtors and accounts payable support, ensuring compliance with Downer policies and contract requirements. 

  • Working collaboratively with finance, contract and operational teams to proactively identify risks and support strong financial governance.

 

What You’ll Bring 

  • A degree in Accounting or equivalent, with a solid foundation in financial accounting principles. 

  • Experience supporting financial reporting, month‑end processes and reconciliations in a fast‑paced environment. 

  • Strong Excel and systems capability, with exposure to enterprise systems such as SAP, WMS or Coupa highly regarded. 

  • A collaborative, confident communication style, with the ability to build positive working relationships across teams. 

  • A proactive mindset, strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently while contributing to shared team goals.
