Massachusetts Department of Transportation seeks an Assistant District Traffic Engineer for Design and Safety (Civil Engineer V) in Worcester. This full-time on-site role, under the District Traffic Engineer, oversees design and safety planning, reviews CIP projects for MUTCD compliance, leads traffic operations analyses, and coordinates with divisions on data, ITS and connected vehicle initiatives. You will run crash queries in IMPACT, assist HSIP eligibility, participate in Road Safety Audits and ICE procedures, and help shape the safety program and staff contracts. Position Summary
Incumbents of positions in this series prepare or review plans, designs, specifications and cost estimates for engineering projects; prepare and/or review reports, studies and analytical data; perform calculations relating to engineering problems; perform engineering surveys; inspect construction and/or maintenance work; and perform related work as required.
The basic purpose of this work is to perform professional engineering duties in such areas as highways, bridges, buildings and facilities all in accordance with sound engineering principles, applicable laws, regulations and standards.
Under the supervision of the District Traffic Engineer, the Assistant District Traffic Engineer for Design and Safety is responsible for all aspects of the design and safety planning, policy and programmatic needs of the District Traffic Engineering Section. Incumbents in this position shall have a demonstrated familiarity and experience with manuals and design guides used in the field of Traffic and Safety Engineering and in support of the Highway Division’s Advertising Program. The Assistant District Traffic Engineer for Design and Safety reports to the District Traffic Engineer in support of all traffic design and safety initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.

Minimum Entrance Requirements
Applicants must have at least (A) six years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials, of which (B) at least four years must have been in a professional capacity, and (C) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience, and the substitutions below.
Substitutions
I. An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering** or civil engineering technology** may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*
II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in civil engineering** or civil engineering technology** may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*
III. A Graduate degree with a major in civil engineering** may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience.*
**NOTE: The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines, such as construction, survey, hydraulics, design, transportation, structural, soils, sanitary, environmental, drafting, highway, architectural, mining, airport and materials.
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required (B) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (C) experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.
