Automotive Diagnostician - ASE Certified MCET
OpusEnvirotest is rolling out a new path for automotive diagnostics expertise with the Motorist Assistant Center, and they’re looking for ASE-certified Master Diagnosticians who want to help motorists understand and resolve emissions-related concerns. The role is onsite and based at the Baltimore, MD headquarters, with travel to Envirotest stations across Maryland. If you enjoy solving problems, explaining technical ideas clearly, and delivering standout customer service, this could be a good fit.
As part of Envirotest, a proud subsidiary of Opus Inspection, the mission is to make the world cleaner and safer through innovative technology and a relentless focus on customers and execution. This is a highly visible position that leverages diagnostic know‑how to support motorists without heavy tooling or shop work, so you can stay attached to your engineering roots while helping people solve real-world emissions issues.
The job sits at Envirotest’s Baltimore hub and involves travel to stations throughout Maryland. You’ll work in a setting that values clear explanations and thoughtful guidance as you help motorists understand what their vehicles need to move forward.
A day in the life of a Master Diagnostician
You’ll assess vehicles to identify emission-related faults and walk customers through the diagnostic process, gathering the information needed to ensure proper repairs. You’ll record test results from OBD checks, including MIL status and diagnostic trouble codes, along with readiness status and other data to support repairs. You’ll also visually inspect vehicles brought in for waivers to verify repairs are complete and perform routine maintenance on instruments and equipment as needed. Other duties may be assigned as required.
While the emphasis is problem solving and clear communication, you’ll stay grounded in the hands-on side of diagnostics by applying your electronics know‑how and a practical approach to testing and reporting results to motorists and repair facilities alike.
What you’ll bring to the role
Here are the must‑have credentials and experience you’ll need:
- Ase Certified with A6 (Electrical), A8 (Engine Performance) and L1 (Advanced Engine Performance)
- Five years of full‑time emissions repair experience, or two years of automotive education plus four years of emissions repair experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
And these additional capabilities will help you excel in daily work:
- Solid understanding of both digital and analog electronics
- Familiarity with test equipment, including digital multimeters
- Strong grasp of electromechanical operation principles
- Basic knowledge of pneumatics
Pay, benefits and practical details
The role pays $80,000 per year, comes with a company‑provided vehicle, and includes a full benefits package covering medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, voluntary benefits, a 401k with a company match, and an annual bonus incentive.
The position is based at Envirotest's Baltimore, MD headquarters and involves travel to Envirotest stations throughout Maryland.
Tips to stand out in this role
Lead your resume with your ASE Master Diagnostician credentials, making sure A6, A8 and L1 are front and center so the recruiter sees you meet the must‑have certifications right away.
Back that up with concrete examples of emissions repair experience or education that align with the must‑have requirements. If you have five years of full‑time emissions repair, or two years of automotive education plus four years of emissions repair experience, spell out where and what you worked on, and how you diagnosed and documented issues.
In interviews, be ready to describe a diagnostic scenario where you gathered OBD data, interpreted MIL status and DTCs, and explained the results to a motorist in plain terms. Also be prepared to discuss how you record results and how those records help guide proper repairs, including any interaction with repair facilities.
Ask a targeted question to show you’re thinking about the role’s impact on customers and operations, for example: How does Envirotest measure the success of the Motorist Assistant Center in helping motorists resolve emissions concerns, and how will you collaborate with station teams to improve outcomes?
