Selby, Australia
$80,000 - $110,000 AUD yearly

Bytewize is looking for a skilled Systems Engineer / Specialist Technician to deliver technical support to the Department of Education through the Technical Support to Schools Program (TSSP). The role is based onsite in Selby, Australia, with flexible employment options including contract, casual or permanent arrangements, and a pro-rata salary in the range of $80,000 – $110,000. The position can be filled on a part-time or full-time basis depending on the candidate.

Bytewize has been providing ICT support since 2001 and is a long-standing panel member of the TSSP, known for reliable services across Victorian schools and private enterprise clients. The company seeks experienced IT professionals to join its team in either contract or ongoing employment with a focus on delivering high-quality technical assistance to schools.

These roles are not entry-level. Successful candidates typically bring at least five years of industry experience, with either direct TSSP exposure, substantial work in the education sector, or an equivalent senior-level corporate IT background.

What you’ll be doing in this school ICT role

You will manage and maintain ICT infrastructure across Department of Education schools, keeping networks and server environments healthy and accessible for staff and students. In large, technology-driven learning environments you’ll provide hands-on support and help resolve complex issues, while keeping documentation up to date to support day-to-day operations.

You’ll work closely with school leadership teams and may deliver ICT professional development when required. You’ll also be involved in planning and deploying devices for 1:1 and BYOD programs, coordinating with stakeholders to minimise disruption and maximise learning outcomes.

Must-have capabilities

Here's what a successful candidate typically brings.

  • At least five years in IT with direct exposure to the TSSP, or a strong background in education ICT, or an equivalent senior corporate IT role
  • Ability to work well on your own and as part of a team, balancing independence with collaboration
  • Proven problem‑solving and escalation skills paired with reliable, well‑organised work habits
  • Excellent people skills and clear, effective communication
  • A systematic approach to troubleshooting and documentation
  • Eligibility to work in Australia (citizen, PR, or permanent visa) plus a current driver’s licence and a reliable vehicle
  • Willingness to undergo police and background checks
  • Hyper-V virtualization administration and experience with Windows and Linux servers
  • Cloud service administration for Google Workspace and Microsoft 365
  • MDM deployment and administration
  • Advanced enterprise networking experience (Cisco and HP switching) and Cisco wireless technologies
  • SOE and image deployment with strong troubleshooting skills
  • Experience supporting large fleets of desktops and notebooks
  • Experience with 1:1 and BYOD device planning, deployment and management
  • Solid technical documentation skills

Nice-to-haves

These aspects would strengthen your application.

  • Previous TSSP experience (if not already covered by the must-have)
  • A track record of success in education-sector ICT projects
  • Ability to design and deliver ICT training sessions for school staff

Pay, benefits and practical details

Remuneration is in the $80,000 – $110,000 (pro-rata) range, with top rates guaranteed based on skills and experience and regular salary reviews tied to performance. The arrangement offers flexible employment options including contract, casual or permanent and accommodates both part-time and full-time setups. There are salary packaging options and opportunities for a company vehicle depending on the role, along with ongoing training and professional development opportunities.

The role is onsite, and Bytewize supports a practical setup for working within the educational environment while keeping options flexible to fit the right candidate’s situation.

Tips for applicants

Lead your resume with your five-plus years of IT experience and call out any TSSP or education-sector work you’ve done, so the panel sees right away how your background aligns with the role.

When you describe your must-have skills, attach concrete examples from past roles. If you’ve managed Hyper-V, Windows and Linux servers, cloud services, MDM, or enterprise networking, back up each item with a brief result or metric you achieved.

Prepare a short story you can share in interviews about a time you supported ICT in a school or large learning environment, including how you coordinated with leadership teams and delivered user training.

Consider a thoughtful question to close the conversation, such as how Bytewize measures the impact of ICT training in schools or how they collaborate with school leaders during TSSP deployments.
