Clarinda, AU
$80,000 - $110,000 AUD yearly

Bytewize is hiring for a Systems Engineer / Specialist Technician to support the Department of Education through the Technical Support to Schools Program (TSSP) in the education sector. The role is onsite in Clarinda, Australia, and is offered as part-time work with the company functioning as the employer. Bytewize has built a solid reputation since 2001 for delivering dependable ICT support to Victorian schools and private-sector clients as a long-standing TSSP panel member.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned IT professional, not entry-level, with a minimum of five years’ industry experience. They should bring either direct TSSP experience, substantial education-sector exposure, or an equivalent level of senior corporate IT support. The person in this role will oversee the ICT infrastructure across Department of Education schools, support both staff and students, and manage complex enterprise environments in technology-rich learning spaces.

This is a role that sits at the intersection of hands-on technical work and collaboration with school leadership to enable learning through reliable technology. You’ll be responsible for keeping school networks and server environments running smoothly, as well as delivering ICT professional development when needed to help staff make the most of available tools.

What you’ll do day to day

In practice, you’ll manage and maintain ICT infrastructure across multiple DoE schools, ensuring networks and server environments stay reliable and secure. You’ll provide hands-on ICT support in large, technology-driven classrooms and learning spaces, tackling complex problems and guiding staff through technical issues. You’ll also work closely with school leaders to plan and deliver ICT professional development when required, helping educators maximise the impact of technology in teaching and learning.

As part of the role, you’ll apply your knowledge to keep systems aligned with school needs, document changes and configurations clearly, and respond to downtime or performance issues with structured escalation if needed. The work blends technical administration with partnership-building to support a broad user base in a dynamic educational setting.

The must-have and the nice-to-haves

The role calls for a strong technical foundation and a track record of working in similar environments. The essentials include the following:

  • Five or more years of industry experience, with preference for prior work within the TSSP, or extensive experience in the education sector, or an equivalent level of senior corporate IT support
  • Hyper-V virtualization administration experience
  • Administration of Windows and Linux server environments
  • Cloud service administration for Google Workspace and Microsoft 365
  • Deployment and management of Mobile Device Management across devices
  • Advanced enterprise networking know-how, including Cisco and HP switching gear
  • Cisco wireless technologies, including controllers and access points
  • SOE and image deployment with strong troubleshooting capabilities
  • Experience supporting large fleets of desktops and notebooks
  • Experience planning, deploying, and managing 1:1 and BYOD programs
  • Strong technical documentation skills

Nice to have extras that would help you stand out include:

  • Prior TSSP experience
  • Proven success in ICT within the education sector
  • Ability to design and deliver ICT training sessions for school staff

Remuneration, benefits and practical details

The position offers a salary range of 80,000 to 110,000 AUD pro-rata. Bytewize allocates top rates based on skills and experience and conducts regular salary reviews tied to performance. Flexible employment options exist, including contract, casual, or permanent arrangements, with both part-time and full-time positions available as needed. Staff may access salary packaging options, and there can be company vehicle opportunities depending on the role. Ongoing training and professional development are also part of the package.

Advice for applicants

Lead your resume with your five-plus years of IT experience and the most relevant work you’ve done in either TSSP or education ICT. Make sure to call out any hands-on duties that align with the job, like managing large school networks or implementing BYOD programs, and quantify impact where possible.

When you describe your must-have skills, back them up with concrete examples: Hyper-V administration, Windows and Linux server management, cloud admin work across Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, and your experience deploying MDM across large device fleets. Show how you documented configurations, or how you supported enterprise networking with Cisco and HP gear.

Be prepared to talk through real-world scenarios in interviews. You may be asked to explain how you supported staff and students in technology-rich environments, how you collaborated with school leaders, and how you delivered ICT training sessions. Expect questions about eligibility to work in Australia, your driving licence, and your willingness to undergo police and background checks.

Finally, think of a thoughtful question to ask about the role’s involvement in upcoming TSSP deployments, opportunities for staff ICT training, or how success in this role is measured within the DoE context.
