Target Australia is hiring a Design Assistant to support the Children’s Wear team in Chadstone, full time onsite. The role blends hands on design support with trend work, range planning and technical tasks such as tech packs, fabric and trim sourcing, fittings and supplier liaison to keep the critical path on track. You’ll need a design qualification and 2+ years in graphic design or surface pattern within retail, plus strong Illustrator, CAD and Lab Dip skills and a keen eye for detail. What will you do?
As the Design Assistant, your primary responsibility is to work collaboratively with the designer and design team to assist with day to day roles and responsibilities. This role supports the designers to focus on driving the handwriting, taste levels and product desirability of the department to exceed customer expectations and grow incremental sales.
Responsibilities include, but not limited:
General Design Support
• Liaise with suppliers on all aspects of product development to ensure on-time delivery and quality standards
• Follow up and assist with approvals and sample submissions from suppliers
• Attend all fittings with Designer, creation on ongoing processes and collaborate with multiple stakeholders
• Work closely with the design team to develop new and exciting styles for the range
• Communicate regularly on any production issues/shortfalls throughout all stages of the process
ensuring we are minimising any impact to the critical path
Trends
• Contribute to trend research and collate/pull together trend boards
• Assist with designer all trend related activities and tasks i.e. Colour palettes, samples.
Ranging
• Support the Designer with range board creation and upkeep and assist with range board release to suppliers
• Work with designer to coordinate the sourcing of fabrics and trims in line with the design brief
• Ongoing update management to option plan
Technical
• Support with technical drawings and must be proficient in Adobe illustrator and CAD
• Assist with style briefs, tech packs and creative briefs
• Liaise with the designer to receive and comment on fabric qualities, lab dips, prints, trims etc. within
the required production time allocated for the approval process
What are we looking for?
The ideal candidates will have a tertiary qualification in Tertiary Design Degree or Diploma with at least 2+ years’ experience in Graphic Design, Surface Pattern, Illustration Design or similar, in a specialty retail environment.
