Expleo is seeking an experienced Electromechanical Design Engineer to join its Glasgow on-site team, supporting a blue-chip defence client through the full design lifecycle to NPI. The role combines mechanical design with electrical integration, requiring solid CAD skills (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor or equivalent), DFMA, tolerance stack-ups and the ability to design ruggedized or sealed enclosures while considering vibration, thermal and environmental factors. You will work with electronics, systems and manufacturing teams, produce 3D models, drawings and BOMs, and participate in design reviews. To apply, tailor your CV to defence or regulated industries, demonstrate clearance eligibility (UK sole national, BPSS, SC), on-site availability in Glasgow, and examples of cross-functional collaboration and delivering prototypes to verification. Highlight initiative and a genuine passion for engineering.

Overview

Expleo is a leading Global Engineering Services Provider with UK presence in 10 locations. We are seeking experienced Electromechanical Design Engineers to support our client at their Glasgow facility. In this role, the successful candidate will contribute to the design and development of state‑of‑the‑art electro‑optical defence and security systems, ensuring robust performance in demanding operational environments.

The position supports the full design lifecycle through to NPI, including concept development, detailed design, analysis, and design-for-manufacture activities. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Electromechanical Design Engineer to deepen their technical capability, broaden their systems understanding, and develop their career within a highly regulated environment.

We are looking for an energetic and driven individual with a strong mechanical design background supported by good electrical integration awareness. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in defence, aerospace, or other heavily regulated industries.

This role offers the chance to work with a blue‑chip client on technology that contributes directly to the security of the UK and its allies. Valued attributes include being a team player who uses their initiative, demonstrates a passion for engineering, and applies a thorough, methodical approach with strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

The Electromechanical Design Engineer will perform, but not be limited to the following type of activities centred on the development and delivery of electronics associated with electro optical systems:

  • Design and develop electromechanical assemblies, including mechanisms, actuators, housings, and electrical interfaces
  • Collaborate with electronics, systems, mechanical and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless integration
  • Support prototype development and provide design input during build, integration and verification activities
  • Produce 3D CAD models, detailed drawings and tolerance analyses in line with project and industry standards
  • Consider environmental, vibration, thermal and materials factors during design and analysis
  • Participate in design reviews and technical discussions with internal teams and customers
  • Generate design documentation, including BOMs, design notes, and verification‑related material

Qualifications

  • Degree level qualification in Mechanical, Electromechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering (or related discipline)
  • A lower qualification would be acceptable for example HNC/HND should the candidate be able to demonstrate significant demonstrable relevant experience in lieu

Essential skills

  • Strong mechanical design fundamentals
  • CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor or similar)
  • Understanding of DFM/DFA
  • Ability to work with electronics and systems teams
  • Understanding of tolerance stack‑up principles

Desired skills

  • Knowledge of materials selection and manufacturing processes
  • Familiarity with FEA tools for structural or thermal analysis
  • Understanding of environmental and qualification considerations (vibration, shock, thermal)
  • Ability to design sealed or ruggedised enclosures
  • Awareness of defence, aerospace or industrial standards and practices

Experience

  • Delivering electromechanical design within a regulated or safety‑critical environment (defence, aerospace, industrial, rail, medical)
  • Working with electromechanical systems such as motors, actuators, sensors or harnessing
  • Supporting prototype build, integration and verification from a design perspective
  • Designing for environmental demands including vibration, shock, thermal and ingress protection
  • Producing detailed CAD models, drawings and tolerance stack‑ups in a professional engineering environment
  • Designing sealed or ruggedised enclosures or assemblies
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams including electronics, systems and manufacturing engineering

What do I need before I apply

  • UK sole National
  • BPSS Cleared
  • Holds or able to obtain SC without caveats
  • Ability/willingness to work at the client site in Glasgow
