Roy Hill, a major iron ore producer, is looking for an Engineer Control Systems to join the Integrated Remote Operations team in West Perth. The position operates on a hybrid basis and follows a 7 on, 7 off roster of days and nights, with responsibilities centered at the West Perth Office. This role suits someone who enjoys hands-on control-system work and collaborating with cross-functional teams in a mining environment.

In this role you’ll be the go-to person for restoring service during plant interruptions, keeping control-system integrity intact, and delivering practical improvements that support safe production, equipment reliability and operational performance. The team values clear communication and a disciplined approach to problem solving, with the chance to influence how control systems support the broader mining and port operations.

The vision behind Roy Hill’s operations is to deliver resources and opportunity for regional communities, while aiming to be a leading mining company for Australia. The role sits within a company focused on tangible outcomes and long-term benefits for today and tomorrow.

A day in the life on the control systems team

You’ll provide both frontline and advanced technical support for PLC, SCADA/HMI, industrial networks and related control-system issues across Mine, Port and Dewatering/NPI operations. When issues arise, you act as the primary escalation point, diagnosing faults, restoring service safely and minimizing production impact through clear stakeholder communication and handover.

You’ll also work to maintain control-system integrity, including security, backups, alarms and documentation, ensuring everything stays aligned with Roy Hill’s standards. When failures recur, you’ll apply structured problem solving and root-cause analysis to implement sustainable fixes and prevent repeat incidents. In addition, you’ll deliver minor modifications and optimization work that boost safety, reliability, throughput and maintainability, collaborating with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, IT/OT and project teams, and providing field support when required.

There may be occasions to carry out small control-system designs, programming, testing and commissioning tasks as directed by the Specialist Control System or Superintendents, and you’ll analyse data and present findings in written reports to help guide decisions across the operation.

Must-haves and nice-to-haves

  • Must-have: a degree in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechatronics, Computer Science or a related discipline, or an electrical trade qualification with equivalent control-systems training and experience
  • Must-have: proven experience supporting, reviewing and developing industrial control systems in an operational environment, including fault finding under time pressure
  • Nice-to-have: experience with fixed-plant or bulk materials handling systems within the mining industry
  • Must-have: experience with PLC and SCADA systems
  • Must-have: previous experience working with Ethernet networks and fieldbuses

Pay, benefits and practical details

The role operates on a 7 on, 7 off days and nights roster, based at the West Perth Office, and follows a hybrid work arrangement. Roy Hill offers performance, retention and profit-share bonuses, plus a private health cover contribution for employees and their immediate family. For primary caregivers, there are 18 weeks of paid parental leave.

Advice for applicants

Lead your resume with your most relevant qualification, either your degree in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechatronics or Computer Science, or your electrical trade with equivalent control-systems training, and then highlight practical experience in industrial control systems within a live environment.

Show how you prove the must-haves by citing concrete examples: your work supporting, reviewing and developing PLC and SCADA systems, handling fault finding under time pressure, and your experience with Ethernet networks and fieldbuses. If mining exposure isn’t present, relate similar fixed-plant or bulk materials handling domain experience you’ve applied in other industries.

Prepare for conversations about small control-system design, programming, testing and commissioning. Be ready to discuss how you’ve collaborated with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, IT/OT and project teams, and share a succinct real-world scenario where you contributed to a measurable improvement.

Think of a smart question to ask that ties to the specifics of this role, such as how the Integrated Remote Operations team coordinates with Operations and IT/OT during plant interruptions, or how success is measured for this position within Roy Hill’s control-system landscape.
