Xero, the Wellington-based software company helping small businesses manage their finances, is hiring a Financial Accountant to join the Group Accounting team. This full-time role offers hybrid work from its Wellington base, with a blend of office days and focused remote work. It’s a good fit for someone who enjoys meaningful number work, building relationships across a global finance function, and contributing to reliable financial reporting for a listed issuer.

In this position you’ll gain exposure across the full accounting cycle, owning and driving improvements to how things are done. You’ll have the chance to question the status quo, explore practical AI and automation ideas to reduce manual effort, and support the external disclosures, employee equity schemes, and strategic financial projects that help Xero empower small businesses around the world. The Group Accounting team works closely with Finance, Tax, Treasury and FP&A, and there’s a strong culture of collaboration across Xero’s Australia and New Zealand footprint.

Closing the books and keeping the numbers clean

Day to day, you’ll play a central role in the month-end close and maintain solid balance sheet reconciliations while supporting the company’s financial reporting requirements as a listed issuer. You’ll contribute technical accounting input and help shape how accounting processes operate across the business, with opportunities to streamline workflows and enhance data quality through automation and thoughtful use of new tools.

You’ll also work on external disclosures and employee equity schemes, and participate in strategic financial initiatives that align with Xero’s global ambitions. The role naturally involves cross-team partnership, from measuring and validating results to communicating insights clearly and building strong relationships with colleagues in Finance, Tax, Treasury and FP&A, so you’ll be able to balance independent work with team collaboration.

What you’ll bring and what would be nice to have

  • A Chartered Accountant qualification, or you’re currently working toward one.

  • A real talent for improving processes and a genuine enthusiasm for boosting efficiency, not just ticking boxes.

  • A sharp eye for detail with the ability to analyse financial results, identify trends, and explain what you see clearly.

  • Comfort in a changing environment where priorities shift and you take initiative, thinking beyond the immediate problem.

  • A collaborative mindset and a commitment to building strong relationships across finance and the wider business.

  • Curiosity about emerging tools like AI and a willingness to test practical uses with sound validation.

  • Experience supporting audits or external disclosures would be a plus.

  • Familiarity with automation in accounting workflows or with integrated finance systems would be helpful.

Hybrid work, a Wellington base and what that means in practice

The role is full-time and located in Wellington, with the accounting team spread across Australia and New Zealand. Xero supports a flexible approach to where you work, with office space available and regular team connection days. You’ll have time carved out for focused work while staying plugged into a collaborative rhythm with the broader team.
