Ideal candidates hold a tertiary Geology qualification (BSc preferred), 1–2 years post graduate experience in underground geology or geotechnical logging, and experience with drilling programs; drivers license and manual vehicle capability are required. Our Waihi Operation in the North Island of New Zealand is an underground gold mine. A recent consent for the Waihi North Project, a new mine to be developed 6km north of the existing operation has provided a long-term extension of mine life providing our 400 staff and contractors, and the people of Waihi, an assurance that we plan to be here for the long-term.

Job Description

This is a new role, created to provide geological and geotechnical logging, mapping, and field support for the Waihi North Project. This includes Wharekirauponga Underground development and surface drilling programmes. Primariliy responsible for the capture of accurate, timely data to support mine design, ground support, resource and reserve modelling, and development decisions, while supervising field contractors and maintaining safety and quality standards.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Complete lithological, structural and alteration mapping and logging of WUG underground development headings.
  • Undertake grade control, including ore/waste delineation of development faces in line with the geological model.
  • Provide accurate sampling, assay, logging, orientation and mapping data to support model updates and reconciliation.
  • Liaise with underground development and mine engineering teams to provide timely geological and ground condition information ahead of development advance.
  • Log surface diamond drill core for WNP site investigations, including lithology, structure, alteration and rock mass characteristics such as RQD, defect logging and core orientation.
  • Coordinate core photography, geotechnical test sample selection, and core recovery and handling in accordance with logging and QA/QC protocols.
  • Work with the Geotechnical team to capture parameters required for geotechnical models and ground support design.
  • Supervise surface and underground drilling contractors and field crews, including drill plods, productivity reporting and site logistics.
  • Coordinate site access, mobilisation, demobilisation and safe working arrangements with the Project Team.
  • Enter and validate geological and geotechnical data, including dispatches, assay results, QA/QC and logging records, in relevant databases such as Leapfrog Geo, acQuire or equivalent.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Geology; minimum BSc preferred.
  • Full current driver licence, with ability to drive manual vehicles.
  • Minimum 1–2 years’ post-graduate experience preferred, ideally including underground mine geology or geotechnical logging.
  • Experience supporting surface or underground drilling programmes is desirable.
