Kinross Gold Corporation is hiring a Health & Safety Specialist for Fort Knox, a full-time onsite role in Fairbanks, AK. Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. Fort Knox celebrated its 25-year anniversary in 2021, and has produced over 8.5 million ounces since it began operation. In 2020, Kinross acquired Manh Choh – a project expected to commence production in 2024 and process ore at Fort Knox.

Job Summary
Promote activities designed to maintain and to improve safety awareness throughout the mine property. Support implementation of policies and procedures under the Health & Safety programs. Assist in safety audits under the Kinross Gold Corporation Environmental and Health and Safety Management System.
Provide support to the Health and Safety Department by assisting with the administration of the sites Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health Programs. Facilitate area Industrial Hygiene inspections, training, and monitoring activities necessary to maintain a safe and healthy workplace, consistently ensure regulatory compliance, and align daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values. Administrator specific training developed by the Health and Safety Department as needed.
Essential Functions
- Assist in the administration of the sites Industrial Hygiene activities, monitoring performance of contractors IH programs and systems.
- Administrate site MSHA new miner training, MSHA annual refresher training and other specific training developed by the Health and Safety Department as needed.
- Conduct health surveys and sampling site wide while creating and/or maintaining appropriate data tracking systems and Assist in the development and implementation of appropriate controls as deemed necessary by the results of monitoring and measuring activities.
- Calibrate, maintain, and/or operate industrial hygiene equipment as deemed necessary to ensure compliance to organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in evaluating and maintaining all current Health and Safety SOPs, manuals, programs, including IH policies and procedures.
- Assist with the Critical Risk Management Program by providing support to risk owners, training, new risk development, deep dive reviews and overall continuous improvement of the program.
- Spend adequate time in the field to encourage use and implementation of Kinross Health and Safety programs.
- Estimated travel based on current job requirements is TBD.
- Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Helps develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.
- Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality, and code of conduct.
- Meets or exceeds established performance expectations set by management.
- Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
- Participate or represent the company during MSHA interactions. Coordinate abatement of any citations and complete the proper reports.
- Works without risk or harm to self and others.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by state agency, or must be able to pass driver competency course and exam.
- Punctuality and regular attendance required.
- Perform other related functions pertaining to employees and contractors.
- Ability to fill in for direct supervisor as needed.
Qualifications and Skill Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
- General understanding of mining operations as well as limited understanding of milling and maintenance operations.
- Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
- Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
- Ability to work independently and also as a member of the management team.
- Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills
- Must possess or have the capability of obtaining a CMSP or MSP certification.
- Must possess or have the capability of obtaining an MSHA instructor certification.
- Must possess or have the capability of obtaining CIH or OHST certification.
- Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
- Must be available for shift work, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
- Prefer Health and Safety background with five or more years of experience.
